In a match that was exciting and competitive until its last moments, Leicester City's star, Patson Daka , succeeded in saving his country, Zambia, from defeat against Mali, forcing a 1-1 draw in the match that brought them together on Monday evening in Casablanca.

Match scenario: Financial dominance and Zambian resilience

The match concluded the first round of Group A fixtures in the Africa Cup of Nations currently being held in Morocco. The opening minutes saw Mali dominate, entering the game with clear attacking intentions and threatening Zambia's goal on several occasions, the most dangerous chance being a shot from Auxerre winger Lassine Seynayoko in the 15th minute.

Despite Zambia's sporadic attempts, the most dangerous turning point of the first half came in the 41st minute when Mali were awarded a penalty after a VAR review, following a foul on Dorgelis Nene. However, Zambian goalkeeper Willard Mwanza produced a superb save, brilliantly denying striker El Bilal Touré's spot-kick and keeping his team's hopes alive before the break.

The excitement of the second half and the decisive goal

As the second half began, Mali continued their attacking pressure, which finally paid off in the 61st minute when the in-form Lassine Seynoko capitalized on a defensive mix-up following a corner kick to slot the ball into the net. Seynoko almost sealed the victory with a second goal in the 84th minute, but his powerful shot went just wide of the post, giving Zambia a lifeline.

Just when everyone thought the three points had gone to Mali, Patson Daka’s experience came to light in the second minute of stoppage time (90+2), as he rose to meet a perfect cross from Mateusz Chanda, heading the ball firmly to the left of goalkeeper Djigui Diarra, to announce a draw that felt like a victory for the “Copper Bullets” team.

The first group's position and the challenges of the next round

This draw is of paramount importance in the Group A standings, especially after hosts Morocco's victory over Comoros in the opening match. With this result, Zambia and Mali share second place with one point each, behind group leaders Morocco with three points.

Both teams face crucial matches next Friday, as Mali will clash with Morocco in a tough test at the Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, while Zambia will seek to capitalize on the morale boost from this deadly draw when they face Comoros in Casablanca, in a match where there is no room for error to ensure competition for a ticket to the second round.
