Yemen Airways announces direct flights between Socotra and Jeddah starting in January 2026. A strategic step to revive tourism, end the archipelago's isolation, and facilitate travel.

In a strategic move marking a turning point for Yemeni air transport, Yemen Airways announced the launch of a direct flight route connecting the Socotra archipelago with Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This decision ends years of travel difficulties faced by the island's residents and visitors, and opens new horizons for boosting tourism in one of the world's most important natural reserves.

Details of the first trip and the urgent goal

The Deputy General Manager for Commercial Affairs at Yemen Airways, Mr. Mohsen Haidara, explained that the company has completed all the technical and operational arrangements to launch the first direct flights on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. He pointed out that the top priority of this inaugural flight is to evacuate foreign tourists stranded on the island as a result of the disruption of some previous air routes, which reflects the national carrier's commitment to international standards for the safety and care of passengers.

Socotra: A jewel of world heritage breaks its isolation

This step is of paramount importance given the global significance of Socotra Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The archipelago, nicknamed the “Galapagos of the Indian Ocean” for its unique biodiversity and rare dragon’s blood trees, has long faced logistical challenges in accessing it, hindering ecotourism. The direct connection with Jeddah, a major regional air transport hub, is expected to facilitate access for tourists and researchers from around the world without the need for complex transit points.

Economic and social dimensions of air connectivity

Yemen Airways has revealed plans to launch a regular weekly flight between the two cities in the near future. This initiative will not only benefit the tourism sector but also has profound economic and social implications. Economically, the new route will boost trade and facilitate the movement of businesspeople. Socially, it will be a lifeline for Yemeni expatriates in the Kingdom, ease travel for Socotra residents to perform Umrah and Hajj, and end the hardship of perilous sea journeys or long, multi-stop flights.

Political Analysis: A Return to the Arab World

In analyzing the implications of this event, journalist and political analyst Salah al-Din al-Asadi told Al-Youm that this air route represents a “long-awaited strategic shift.” Al-Asadi pointed out that directly linking Socotra to Jeddah is a sovereign affirmation of the island’s connection to its Yemeni and Arab roots, and a practical step to break the isolation imposed by the war and operational restrictions of recent years.

Al-Asadi praised the pivotal role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting the Yemeni transport sector, stressing that securing and operating Yemeni airports, including Aden, Al-Rayyan, Seiyun, and soon Al-Ghaydah and Ataq, is the result of continuous cooperation with the leadership of the Arab Coalition and the Homeland Shield Forces, which contributes to normalizing the situation and restoring the vitality of state institutions.
