The Saudi capital, Riyadh, is hosting the World Defence Exhibition , the premier event highlighting the future of the defense and security industry and serving as a global platform to showcase the latest technologies and innovations in this field. In its 2024 edition, held from February 4 to 8, Saudi Arabia's participation stood out as tangible evidence of the progress made in achieving the goals of the Kingdom's Vision 2030 , particularly with regard to localizing military industries.
Strategic background: From importing to local manufacturing
Historically, Saudi Arabia has been one of the world's largest importers of military equipment and services. However, the launch of Vision 2030 marked a strategic turning point, with the Saudi leadership setting an ambitious goal of localizing more than 50% of military spending by 2030. This approach not only aims to enhance defense independence and national security, but also seeks to build a sustainable industrial sector, diversify sources of economic income, create high-quality job opportunities for national talent, and transfer advanced technology and knowledge to the Kingdom.
A platform to showcase achievements and attract investments
The World Defense Show, organized by the General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI), is an exceptional opportunity for Saudi companies and government entities to showcase their achievements and growing capabilities. In this context, the participation of the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources as a key partner in the Supply Chain Zone underscores the integration between the industrial and defense sectors. The Ministry's pavilion included key entities such as the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, the Saudi Export Development Authority (Saudi Exports), the Saudi Geological Survey, the Saudi Industrial Development Fund, the National Industrial Development Center, the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP), the Economic Cities and Special Zones Authority (MODON), the Local Content and Government Procurement Authority, and the Saudi Export-Import Bank.
This broad participation aims to highlight the attractive investment environment in the Kingdom, and the promising opportunities available to local and international investors in the industrial and mining sectors, which are essential components in the supply chains of defense industries.
Local, regional and international impact
At the local level, the World Defence Exhibition contributes to accelerating the growth of the military industries sector, stimulating innovation, research and development, and enabling small and medium-sized national companies to enter this vital sector. Regionally, Saudi Arabia's success in building an advanced defense industrial base enhances its position as an influential force contributing to the stability and security of the region. Internationally, the exhibition opens new horizons for strategic partnerships between Saudi companies and their global counterparts, promoting the exchange of expertise and the transfer of advanced technologies, and establishing the Kingdom as a key and reliable player on the global defense industry map.
