Discover Victor Osimhen's inspiring journey from selling newspapers in Nigeria to shining with Napoli and Galatasaray, and his readiness to lead the Eagles in the Africa Cup of Nations.

The road wasn't easy for Nigerian star Victor Osimhen, who went from being a child selling newspapers and water bottles amidst the suffocating streets of Lagos to one of the most prominent strikers in world football today. Osimhen is currently making headlines not only for his story of struggle, but also for his remarkable performances with his Turkish club Galatasaray and his leadership of his national team's attack, the "Super Eagles.".

Nigeria's hopes in the African Cup of Nations in Morocco

As Nigeria prepares to compete in the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, all eyes are on 26-year-old Osimhen. Nigeria has been drawn into Group C, which includes strong teams such as Tunisia, Tanzania, and Uganda. Osimhen carries the hopes of millions of Nigerians who are eager to see their national team lift the trophy for the fourth time in its history, and the first time since their last title in 2013 in South Africa.

This tournament holds particular significance for Nigeria, as the current generation seeks to restore Nigerian football's continental prestige after missing out on the last World Cup. Malian-French coach Eric Schiel described Osimhen as "the greatest striker in the world," reflecting the high expectations placed upon the player.

A story of rising from the depths of suffering

Osimhen's journey is a classic example of an African success story that begins in abject poverty and culminates in global stardom. As a child, the stench of garbage at the Olusoson landfill in Lagos was a daily reality, and selling newspapers was a means of survival and supporting his family. Osimhen shared these painful memories on social media, not to elicit sympathy, but to inspire other young Nigerians facing similar circumstances.

The Turning Point: Emmanuel Amunike and the Second Chance

Osimhen's career almost ended before it began when he was initially left out of the under-17 squad before the 2015 World Cup. Had it not been for the intervention of assistant coaches who persuaded coach Emmanuel Amunike to give him a second chance, the world might never have witnessed the emergence of this prolific goalscorer. Osimhen seized the opportunity, scoring 10 goals in 7 matches, leading Nigeria to the title in Chile – an achievement he owes much to Amunike, the Nigerian legend and scorer of both goals in the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations final.

A successful professional career and ongoing challenges

After his impressive performances at the Under-17 World Cup, Osimhen moved to Europe, where he struggled at German club Wolfsburg, but then exploded onto the scene in Belgium with Charleroi and later in France with Lille. His big break came with a record-breaking €70 million transfer to Italian side Napoli, where he played a pivotal role in bringing the Serie A title back to southern Italy in 2023 after a three-decade wait.

Today, with his move to Galatasaray in Turkey, Osimhen continues his goal-scoring spree, bolstered by a promising attacking partnership in the national team with Ademola Lookman, the Atalanta star and African Player of the Year. Despite injuries that often force him to wear his famous protective mask, Osimhen remains the most prominent symbol of Nigeria's ambition to reclaim the African crown.
