In a strategic move that aligns with the major transformations taking place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Jeddah University launched its ambitious research and innovation strategy for the next five years (2026–2030). This strategy aims to bring about a qualitative shift in academic output by transforming theoretical scientific production from mere research papers into tangible products and startups that contribute to economic development.
This announcement comes in the context of a historic transformation in the higher education sector in the Kingdom, where universities are no longer just institutions for imparting knowledge, but have become key drivers of economic growth within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030. This vision seeks to enhance the Kingdom’s position in global innovation indicators, and to move from an oil-dependent economy to a sustainable knowledge economy, which is what Jeddah University has responded to by redirecting its research compass.
During the Research and Innovation Forum, the university showcased its impressive scientific achievements, which form a solid foundation for future progress. Figures revealed that university faculty and staff have published over 10,000 scientific papers in top-tier journals and international databases, in addition to supporting and funding more than 2,000 research projects. These efforts culminated in the registration of 14 patents, reflecting the inherent capabilities of the university's researchers in generating innovative solutions.
Dr. Dina Hajjar, Dean of the Deanship of Research and Innovation, explained that the new strategy focuses primarily on bridging the gap between academic laboratories and market needs. She indicated that the next objective is to encourage researchers to establish knowledge-based startups (spin-offs) that leverage their research outputs, thereby creating added value for the national economy.
This transformation is expected to have far-reaching effects. Locally, it will contribute to creating quality jobs and supporting local content with innovative and technologically advanced products. Regionally and internationally, this approach will raise the university's ranking and enhance the Kingdom's position as a regional hub for research and development, capable of attracting international investments and partnerships in science and technology.
The forum witnessed a remarkable turnout of experts and academics, and included an exhibition of innovations that highlighted the promising potential of national talents, concluding its activities with an open invitation to entrepreneurs and innovators to participate in shaping a future based on innovation and continuous development.
