In a significant development representing a qualitative escalation in the naval conflict, Ukraine announced on Monday that it had successfully targeted a Russian submarine docked in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk for the first time using an advanced maritime drone. The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) confirmed that the attack inflicted “severe damage” on the submarine, rendering it inoperable, a major blow to the Russian fleet.
Background of the Black Sea conflict
Since the start of the Russian invasion in February 2022, the Black Sea has been a vital theater of military operations. Although Ukraine lost a significant portion of its conventional naval forces after Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014, it resorted to asymmetric warfare strategies to counter Russian naval superiority. This approach was clearly demonstrated after the sinking of the Moskva, the pride of the Russian fleet, by Ukrainian Neptune missiles in April 2022. Over time, Kyiv developed a fleet of suicide drones, such as the Sea Baby and the MAGURA V5, which became an effective weapon for targeting Russian warships, the Black Sea Fleet base in Sevastopol, and even the Crimean Bridge.
The importance and impact of targeting submarines
This attack holds significant strategic and tactical importance. The targeted submarine belongs to the Kilo-class, diesel-electric attack submarines that form the backbone of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. These submarines are renowned for their ability to launch Kalibr cruise missiles, which Russia has used extensively to strike vital targets and infrastructure deep inside Ukraine. Therefore, disabling a submarine of this type represents not only a material loss but also limits Russia's ability to launch long-range missile attacks from a platform that is difficult to detect and destroy.
Strategic implications for Russia
The targeting of Novorossiysk port is itself a powerful message. Following repeated Ukrainian attacks on the port of Sevastopol in Crimea, the Russian Navy relocated many of its most valuable ships and submarines to Novorossiysk, considered a more secure rear base. This attack demonstrates that Russian bases in the Black Sea are no longer invulnerable and that the range of Ukrainian unmanned weapons has significantly expanded. This development is forcing the Russian leadership to reassess its defense strategy and may lead it to disperse its ships further, complicating its logistics and reducing its operational effectiveness in the region. So far, there has been no immediate comment from the Russian Ministry of Defense on the Ukrainian announcement.
