British Defence Secretary John Healey announced on Sunday that Iran had launched two ballistic missiles toward Cyprus, in what he described as indiscriminate retaliatory attacks following recent US and Israeli strikes. The minister explained that military assessments indicated the missiles were not directly targeting the Mediterranean island, but their trajectory posed a real threat to bases and personnel in the area.
In an interview with the BBC, Healey revealed that British fighter jets actively participated in what he described as defensive operations in the region, operating from the British airbase in Cyprus and another base in Qatar. The minister asserted his absolute certainty that the attack was not intended to target Cypriot territory, but emphasized that the incident underscored the current vulnerability of British bases, military personnel, and civilians. He did not provide further details regarding the fate of the two missiles or the interception operations.
In a related development, the British Defense Secretary accused Tehran of launching increasingly indiscriminate and reckless attacks. In a separate interview with Sky News, he stated that this incident clearly demonstrates the existence of a real and growing threat from a regime that is conducting widespread attacks across the region, necessitating a defensive British response to protect interests and forces deployed there.
The minister noted that the United Kingdom, along with the United States, has reinforced its defense forces in the Middle East to counter these threats. He confirmed that British forces are conducting continuous air patrols and working to shoot down drones that could pose a threat to bases, personnel, or allies, as part of security measures taken to address current regional tensions.
