Terry Yorath, the Leeds United legend and former Lebanon national team coach, has died at the age of 75. Learn about his illustrious career and achievements with Lebanese and Welsh football.

The sporting world in Britain and Lebanon mourned the death of Welsh football legend Terry Yorath, former coach of the Lebanese national team and Leeds United icon, at the age of 75 after a short illness. His family issued a moving statement confirming that he passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones.

Yorath is considered one of the most prominent figures in the history of Welsh and English football, his name synonymous with the golden era of Leeds United in the 1970s. Under the legendary manager Don Revie, Yorath was a key pillar in midfield, playing a vital role in the team's First Division title win (the former name of the Premier League) in 1974. His playing career wasn't limited to Leeds; he also enjoyed successful professional stints with Coventry City and Tottenham Hotspur, in addition to representing Wales in 59 international matches, making him one of his country's all-time leading men.

On the coaching front, Yorat left an indelible mark on Lebanese football. He took charge of the national team, nicknamed "The Cedars," during a critical period between 1995 and 1997, a time of rebuilding Lebanese football after years of war. Thanks to his European experience and strong leadership qualities, Yorat transformed the team's performance, leading them to a remarkable 60-place jump in the FIFA rankings – an unprecedented achievement at the time. His efforts culminated in guiding Lebanon to a bronze medal at the 1997 Arab Games hosted by Beirut, cementing his place in the hearts of Lebanese fans.

With his national team, Wales, Jorath experienced dramatic moments as a coach, coming very close to leading the team to the 1994 World Cup finals in the United States. However, a painful loss to Romania in the decisive match prevented the realization of this dream, on a night that remains etched in the minds of Welsh fans.

On a personal level, Yorath faced significant tragedies, most notably the death of his son Daniel in 1992 at the age of 15 from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy while playing football with his father in the garden. The family acknowledged this profound loss in their obituary, stating, "Our hearts are broken, but we take comfort in the thought that he will be reunited with our brother Daniel." His daughter, Gabe Logan, one of Britain's most popular sports presenters, had to leave her job at the BBC at the last minute to be by her father's side during his final moments.

Condolences poured in from the clubs he coached or played for, with Leeds United issuing a statement describing Yorath as a “legend,” while the Football Association of Wales expressed its deep sadness at the passing of one of its most loyal sons, affirming that his legacy will remain immortal in the history of the game.
