The General Authority for Transport announced the suspension of the requirement for valid certificates to issue and renew navigation licenses for ships in the Arabian Gulf for a period of 30 days to support business continuity.

The Saudi Arabian Public Transport Authority has announced a new strategic step: suspending the requirement for valid certificates and documents to be in effect for issuing or renewing maritime licenses and operating permits for marine vessels. This decision reflects the Authority's commitment to streamlining procedures and supporting the maritime sector, a cornerstone of the national economy.

The authority clarified that this suspension will last for (30) days, a period that is extendable if needed, provided there is no negative impact on the safety of lives or the protection of the marine environment. This exceptional measure includes both Saudi and foreign vessels within the Kingdom's territorial waters in the Arabian Gulf region.

The importance of flexible shipping licenses in supporting supply chains

Historically, the Arabian Gulf is one of the world's most important strategic waterways, through which a significant portion of global energy supplies and trade pass. In line with the Kingdom's Vision 2030, Saudi Arabia is placing great emphasis on developing its maritime transport and port sector to transform the Kingdom into a global logistics hub connecting three continents. The provision of streamlined procedures for issuing and renewing maritime licenses reflects a deep understanding of the challenges that the maritime industry may face, whether geopolitical or logistical. Past experiences, such as the global supply chain crisis, have demonstrated that regulatory flexibility is key to maintaining market stability and the uninterrupted flow of goods.

Economic and operational impacts on the maritime sector

This decision is expected to have a tangible positive impact on several levels. Domestically, it will ensure the uninterrupted continuation of major offshore projects and exploration and production operations, free from delays caused by bureaucratic or technical procedures. Regionally and internationally, this step enhances the reliability of Saudi ports and waters as an attractive and safe environment for foreign vessels, contributing to the stability of maritime traffic in the Arabian Gulf and thus ensuring the efficient flow of global supply chains.

Ship exceptions and streamlined operational processes

This decision comes in response to current circumstances and aims to support the continuity of maritime operations and enhance the smooth flow of operations within the Kingdom's territorial waters. The exemption includes vessels involved in maritime works and projects within the Kingdom's maritime zones that may face operational challenges preventing them from departing to complete technical requirements or conduct necessary inspections outside those waters.

The General Authority for Transport confirmed that this measure primarily aims to enable ships to continue their work efficiently and safely, and to enhance the flexibility of operational processes, while fully emphasizing compliance with the relevant regulatory requirements that ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation.
