In a festive atmosphere brimming with colors and traditional rhythms, the Saudi Ministry of Media launched the “Sudanese Cultural Week” on Sunday at Al-Suwaidi Park in Riyadh, as part of the second edition of the “Global Harmony” initiative, held within the Riyadh Season events. This week culminates a series of cultural weeks showcasing the cultures of 14 countries, offering a unique window into the human diversity embraced by the Kingdom.
The festivities kicked off with a grand celebratory procession embodying the spirit and rich history of Sudan. Participants presented folk performances accompanied by the energetic rhythms of the "dalouka" drum and the soulful melodies of the "rababa" (a traditional stringed instrument). The traditional Sudanese bridal procession captivated the audience, offering a vibrant display of heritage reflecting authentic customs and traditions, and eliciting enthusiastic responses from visitors of various nationalities.
Background of the initiative and its cultural significance
The “Global Harmony” initiative, organized by the Ministry of Media in collaboration with the General Entertainment Authority and the Quality of Life Program, is a pioneering initiative that embodies the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 in building a vibrant society and fostering cultural openness. The initiative aims to deepen communication between the various expatriate communities residing in the Kingdom and Saudi society, creating a platform for knowledge and cultural exchange, thereby promoting the values of coexistence, tolerance, and mutual respect.
Hosting Sudanese culture is of particular importance given the historical ties and deep social bonds that unite the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Sudan. The Sudanese community is one of the largest expatriate communities in the Kingdom and has contributed significantly to various aspects of development. This week celebrates this shared heritage and strengthens the fraternal bonds between the two peoples.
Expected impact and a packed program
The Sudanese Cultural Week is expected to have a positive impact at both the local and regional levels. Locally, it offers citizens and residents of Riyadh a rare opportunity to experience firsthand the richness and diversity of Sudanese heritage, including its arts, music, fashion, and cuisine. Regionally, the event sends a powerful message about the depth of Saudi-Sudanese relations and reflects the Kingdom's commitment to celebrating Arab and African cultures.
The week-long program includes a diverse range of activities, such as concerts by top Sudanese singers, cultural pavilions showcasing handicrafts and traditional products, and displays of distinctive Sudanese clothing like the jalabiya and thobe. The event also offers the opportunity to sample some of Sudan's most famous dishes, providing visitors with a comprehensive cultural experience.
