Saudi Arabia’s STC Group, the telecommunications giant, announced that it has won a strategic project to develop the telecommunications infrastructure in the Syrian Arab Republic, in partnership with the Syrian sovereign wealth fund. The project, named “Silklink,” is valued at approximately SAR 3 billion and was awarded after a competitive bidding process involving major regional telecommunications companies.
According to the official statement published by the company on the Saudi Stock Exchange (Tadawul), the Silklink project aims to revolutionize Syria's digital infrastructure and connect it regionally and internationally. The project includes the construction of a state-of-the-art fiber optic network spanning over 4,500 kilometers within Syrian territory, as well as the establishment of modern data centers and landing stations for international submarine cables. Under the partnership agreement, stc Group will hold a 75% majority stake in the project, while the Syrian sovereign wealth fund will retain a 25% share.
General context and importance of the project
This project comes at a crucial time for Syria, which is striving to rebuild its infrastructure, severely damaged over the past decade. The telecommunications sector and digital transformation are fundamental pillars of any reconstruction efforts and sustainable economic development. This significant investment by a leading Saudi company represents an important step in the restoration of economic and diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Syria, paving the way for further investments in other vital sectors.
Expected impact at the local and regional levels
Domestically, the project is expected to significantly enhance data transmission capacity and network reliability. This will enable Syrian telecom operators to offer advanced services such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), and, in the future, 5G applications. It will also improve internet quality for citizens and businesses, support the growth of the digital economy, and create new job opportunities in engineering and technology.
Regionally and internationally, the Silklink project is an extension of stc’s ambitious strategy to expand its investments in cross-border digital infrastructure. The project aims to build a regional connectivity network that leverages Syria’s strategic geographic location as a bridge connecting Arab, Asian, and European markets. This new digital corridor will enhance stc’s position as a leading digital enabler in the region and support its plans for sustainable growth in the telecommunications and digital services sectors, thus solidifying its role as a key player on the global telecommunications landscape.
