The Saudi Post Corporation (Sabil), in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture, announced the issuance of a new commemorative postage stamp with a face value of three (3) riyals, in celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This issue commemorates the historic moment when the foundation stone of the first Saudi state was laid by Imam Muhammad bin Saud – may God have mercy on him – in 1727 AD, and affirms the historical and cultural depth of the Kingdom, which extends for nearly three centuries.
Historical background: Founding day and the deep roots of the state
Saudis celebrate their National Day on February 22nd each year. This day, established by royal decree in 2022, is a celebration of the deep-rooted history of the Saudi state. It commemorates the founding of the First Saudi State by Imam Muhammad bin Saud, with its capital in Diriyah. This state formed the nucleus of a unique political and cultural unity in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula. It established the principles of stability, security, and development, paving the way for subsequent stages in the Kingdom's history, culminating in its unification by the founding King, Abdulaziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud (may God have mercy on him).
The importance of the publication: national symbolism and a tool for cultural documentation
The issuance of this commemorative stamp is more than just a postal item; it carries profound symbolic and cultural significance. Domestically, the stamp embodies national pride and strengthens the connection of current generations to their ancestors' history and sacrifices in building a strong and stable nation. This collaboration between “Subul” and the Ministry of Culture also reflects a shared commitment to documenting the Kingdom's significant historical milestones, preserving its cultural heritage, and presenting it to the world in an innovative way.
Internationally, commemorative stamps serve as traveling cultural ambassadors, reaching all corners of the globe to tell the story of the Kingdom's founding day and highlight its rich history. These issues hold special value for stamp collectors worldwide, contributing to raising awareness of this important national occasion beyond the Kingdom's borders. They are an effective means of preserving national memory, documenting major achievements, and affirming that the Kingdom's current journey of development and prosperity, under the leadership of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and His Royal Highness the Crown Prince – may God protect them – is a continuation of a long-standing legacy of giving and building.
