Spain coach Luis de la Fuente warns his players of the strength of the Saudi national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup, praising Bielsa's tactics with Uruguay and the Finalesima match.

Luis de la Fuente, the Spanish national team coach, delivered a stern warning to his players regarding their upcoming match against Saudi Arabia in the group stage of the 2026 World Cup. These remarks come as teams around the world prepare for the largest edition of the tournament in history, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, featuring 48 teams for the first time.

World Cup draw and the challenge group

The draw, which took place in the American capital, Washington, placed the Spanish "Matador" at the top of Group H, in a not-so-risk encounter that includes the Saudi national team, the Cape Verde national team, in addition to the prestigious Uruguayan national team, the champion of the first editions of the World Cup in 1930 and 1950. The European champion is scheduled to begin its journey against Cape Verde, followed by the anticipated match against the Saudi "Green Falcons", before concluding the first round with a fiery encounter against Uruguay.

Why is De La Fuente warning against Saudi Arabia?

Speaking to the Spanish newspaper AS, De la Fuente stressed the importance of not underestimating opponents, recalling the recent memory of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The veteran coach said, "I would like to remind everyone that Saudi Arabia beat Argentina in the last World Cup." This statement refers to the Saudi national team's historic achievement of defeating Lionel Messi and his teammates in their opening match, a scenario the Spanish coach fears will be repeated. He emphasized that being in a group that seems manageable on paper does not mean there are no major challenges.

The tactical clash with Bielsa and the Finale showdown

The Spanish coach also addressed the tactical challenge awaiting his team against Uruguay, led by the experienced Argentine coach Marcelo Bielsa. De la Fuente expressed his admiration for Bielsa's style, describing him as a highly competitive opponent who manages his team perfectly. The discussion also touched upon the upcoming "Finalissima" match against Argentina at Lusail Stadium in Doha, which he considered a golden opportunity to face the world champions and test his team's capabilities before the World Cup. He also praised the legendary Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for their continued ability to make a difference despite their age.
