The Somali army and intelligence services have regained control of strategic locations in Lower Shabelle, dealing a significant blow to al-Shabaab. Learn more about the operation and its strategic importance.

As part of their ongoing military operations, the Somali Armed Forces achieved a new battlefield victory, strengthening their security grip in the south of the country. Units of the Somali National Army, supported by elements of the National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA), regained full control of the Gandershe and Watanane districts in the Lower Shabelle region, after routing al-Shabaab militants linked to al-Qaeda and clearing the areas they had been using as bases for launching attacks.

The official Somali news agency SONNA, quoting field military commanders, confirmed that the successful operation carried out on Wednesday resulted in the collapse of the terrorist militia's defenses and the flight of its members in the face of the advancing military forces. The sources indicated that the joint forces succeeded in securing these vital areas, thereby undermining the movement's logistical capabilities in the region and killing a number of its prominent field commanders, in a move aimed at cutting off supply lines to the remaining cells.

Context of the conflict and government efforts

These developments come in the context of the "total war" declared by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud against al-Shabaab since he took office, with the aim of eradicating the terrorism that has plagued the country for over a decade and a half. The Somali government, supported by local clans and international partners, is waging fierce battles to reclaim territory, and in the past two years has succeeded in liberating large areas in central and southern Somalia that had been under the group's control for many years.

The strategic importance of the Lower Shabelle region

The Lower Shabelle region holds paramount strategic importance due to its geographical location bordering the capital, Mogadishu, and its role as the country's breadbasket thanks to its fertile agricultural lands. The recapture of the coastal town of Gandershe, in particular, represents a significant blow to the movement, as it had been using the coastal areas to smuggle weapons and fighters. Securing this region means securing the capital's perimeter and preventing suicide attacks and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) that are often prepared in these nearby areas.

Regional and international impact

The importance of these operations extends beyond the local level, impacting the stability of the entire Horn of Africa region. The Somali army's success in establishing control strengthens the international community's confidence in the ability of Somali security institutions to assume responsibility for the country's security, particularly given the ongoing arrangements for the withdrawal of the African Union Transitional Military Mission (ATMIS). Eliminating the movement's strongholds in the south is a crucial step towards creating a conducive environment for investment and reconstruction, which will positively affect the economic and security situation in East Africa.
