The Saudi Arabian Football Federation has announced the launch of the new edition of the "Women's Premier League Challenge Cup" (Winter Challenge), scheduled to be held this December, in a move aimed at enhancing the sustainability of the competition and raising the technical efficiency of women's clubs in the Kingdom.
A qualitative leap in Saudi women's football
This tournament is part of the significant sporting development taking place in Saudi Arabia under Vision 2030, which has placed great emphasis on empowering women in the sports sector. Since the establishment of the Women's Premier League, women's football has witnessed rapid development. The Saudi Football Federation, through the creation of tournaments like the "Winter Challenge," aims to bridge the time gap between breaks and ensure the continuity of matches, which positively impacts the physical fitness of players and the technical readiness of national teams.
Group system and participating clubs
This year's edition is witnessing fierce competition between the elite Saudi clubs, as the participating teams have been divided into two groups based on geographical distribution and technical ranking, to ensure strong matches from the early rounds:
- Group (A): Includes the poles of the capital and the eastern region, namely: Al-Nasr, Al-Hilal, Al-Qadisiyah, and Sho’la Al-Sharqiyah.
- Group (B): Includes the giants of the western and northern regions, namely: Al-Ahli, Al-Ittihad, Al-Ula, and Neom.
An innovative technical system to increase competitiveness
The organizing committee adopted a special points system designed to incentivize teams to win matches. The tournament is played in a single round-robin format in its first stage. The top two ranked teams face the third and fourth-ranked teams. If the match ends in a draw after regulation time, penalty kicks will be used immediately, and points will be awarded as follows:
- 3 points: for the winner in regular time.
- Two points: for the winner of the penalty shootout.
- One point: for the loser in the penalty shootout.
Host stadiums and decisive dates
The tournament is scheduled to kick off on December 10, 2025, with the Eastern Province hosting matches at Al-Taraji Club Stadium in Qatif, while Jeddah will host matches at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium. The excitement will continue until December 20, with the highly anticipated final taking place in the capital, Riyadh, at Al-Enaya College Stadium.
The "Winter Challenge" is seen not only as a preparatory tournament, but also as a crucial preparatory stage before the resumption of league competitions, giving coaches the opportunity to try out new plans and involve a larger number of players to increase playing minutes, which is in the interest of developing the Saudi women's football system in general.
