The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued today a series of advanced warnings about weather fluctuations affecting various regions of the Kingdom, warning of active winds stirring up dust and sand in the Eastern Province, while also warning of moderate rainfall that may be heavy at times in the Asir region, accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.
Active winds and reduced visibility in the Eastern Province
In its detailed warning for the Eastern Province, the center explained that active surface winds reaching speeds of 40 to 49 kilometers per hour will affect large parts of the region. These effects include major cities and governorates such as Dammam, Dhahran, Khobar, Qatif, Jubail, and Ras Tanura, in addition to Abqaiq, Al-Ahsa, and Khafji. The center warned that these winds will stir up dust and sand, causing a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, especially on highways and in open areas. This weather pattern is also expected to be accompanied by high waves along the Arabian Gulf coast, necessitating caution from seafarers and fishermen. This weather condition is expected to continue, God willing, until 5:00 PM today.
These weather conditions are typical of the desert climate of the Eastern Province, which makes it prone to dust storms, especially during seasonal transitions. These phenomena directly impact air and sea navigation, as well as road traffic, necessitating heightened preparedness from relevant authorities such as civil defense and traffic police.
Thunderstorms expected in the Asir highlands
Meanwhile, the National Center for Meteorology warned of thunderstorms and rain in the Asir region, with moderate rainfall expected overall. The report indicated that these storms will be accompanied by strong winds that could reduce visibility to near zero, as well as hail and lightning. The affected areas include the city of Abha, Khamis Mushait, and parts of the surrounding highlands. The center urged citizens and residents to exercise caution and stay away from valleys and floodplains, as this weather pattern is expected to continue until 7:00 PM.
The Asir region is characterized by its towering mountains, which contribute to the formation of cumulonimbus clouds and seasonal rainfall, especially during the summer. While this rain is a vital water source and supports agriculture and tourism in the region, it can pose a danger if it is heavy, as it can cause flash floods in the valleys. These warnings play a crucial role in protecting lives and property, and in enabling residents and visitors to take the necessary precautions.
