The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued its daily weather report, forecasting continued impact from active surface winds stirring up dust and sand across large parts of the Eastern Province and Riyadh. The report indicated that these weather conditions could lead to a significant decrease in horizontal visibility, necessitating caution.
Background of dust phenomena in the region
Dust storms and dust-laden winds are a common weather phenomenon in Saudi Arabia, due to its predominantly desert geography. Vast deserts such as the Empty Quarter and the Great Nafud cover large areas of the country. These winds are typically active during seasonal transitions or as a result of the region being affected by low-pressure systems. The northwesterly winds that blow across the region are known as the "Shamal" winds, and they are often the primary cause of dust storms during the spring and summer months, directly impacting air quality and the daily lives of residents.
Expected effects and health advice
These dust storms have multiple effects, most notably on health. Health authorities are constantly warning, especially those with asthma and respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children, against direct exposure to dust and sand. They advise staying indoors as much as possible, keeping windows tightly closed, and wearing protective masks when going out is necessary. These conditions also affect transportation, as reduced visibility increases the risk of traffic accidents on highways and main roads connecting cities in the Eastern Province with Riyadh, and may cause delays or cancellations of some flights at major airports such as King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam.
Forecast details and sea conditions
According to the center's report, light rain is possible in parts of the western and southwestern highlands, as well as the northern parts of the eastern region. Regarding maritime traffic:
- Red Sea: Surface winds will be northwesterly to northerly in the northern and central parts, and southeasterly to southwesterly in the southern part, with speeds ranging from 15 to 30 km/h. Wave height will be between half a meter and one and a half meters, and sea conditions will be slight to moderate.
- Arabian Gulf: Surface winds will be southeasterly to southerly at a speed of 15-36 km/h. Wave height will be between half a meter and one and a half meters, and sea conditions will be slight to moderate.
The National Center for Meteorology called on everyone to follow its reports and warnings continuously and to comply with the instructions of the relevant authorities to ensure their safety.
