The National Center for Meteorology issues a weather alert in Saudi Arabia, predicting a cold wave and frost reaching 3 below zero in the north, and winds and dust in the east.

The National Center for Meteorology issued a detailed report on weather conditions , warning of significant weather fluctuations including a sharp drop in temperatures in the northern regions, and surface wind activity that stirs up dust and sand in the eastern region, as part of its continuous monitoring of weather developments.

Details of the cold wave on the northern border

The center explained in its alert that large parts of the Northern Borders region will experience a strong cold wave, with its effects beginning at 2:00 AM and continuing until 8:00 AM on Monday. This weather system includes the governorates of Al-Uwaiqilah, Rafha, Tarif, and Arar.

Forecasts indicate a significant drop in minimum temperatures, ranging from 0°C to -3°C, creating the potential for frost during the early morning hours. This phenomenon is typical for this time of year, as the northern regions of the Kingdom are affected by cold air masses originating from higher latitudes.

The climatic and geographical context of the region

The Northern Borders region, specifically the province of Tarif, holds particular climatic significance during the Kingdom's winters. Historically, it experiences the lowest temperatures in the Arabian Peninsula due to its high altitude and open geographical location, which makes it a corridor for polar winds. These cold spells are typically accompanied by warnings to farmers and livestock breeders to take necessary precautions to protect crops and livestock from the expected frost.

Active winds and reduced visibility in the Eastern Province

In a related development, the National Center for Meteorology warned of different weather conditions the Eastern Province , including active winds and dust storms starting at 9:00 AM and continuing until 6:00 PM. The warning covers the cities of Jubail, Dammam, Khobar, Qatif, and Ras Tanura.

Wind speeds are expected to reach between 40 and 49 kilometers per hour, leading to reduced horizontal visibility. This necessitates caution for those using highways and open roads. The situation also affects the governorates of Al-Ahsa, Al-Udayd, and Buqayq, where dust storms will reduce visibility to between 3 and 5 kilometers.

Safety recommendations and guidelines

Due to these weather fluctuations, experts advise residents of northern regions to wear heavy winter clothing and ensure they have safe heating. In the eastern region, those with respiratory conditions and asthma are advised to avoid direct exposure to dust. Traffic authorities also urge drivers to exercise caution and maintain safe distances while driving due to reduced visibility to ensure everyone's safety.
