The General Authority for Roads in Saudi Arabia announced the launch of a significant awareness initiative, the “Safe Roads Guide,” coinciding with the start of the holy month of Ramadan. This step comes as part of the Authority’s ongoing efforts to raise road safety standards and enhance traffic awareness among drivers, with the aim of achieving the highest standards of safety and efficiency within the Saudi road network, in line with the Kingdom’s quality of life objectives.
General context and importance of the initiative during Ramadan
The launch of this guide is particularly important during Ramadan, a month that witnesses a significant shift in traffic patterns and density. Intercity travel increases dramatically, especially towards Mecca and Medina for Umrah pilgrimages, as well as for family visits. Driving habits also change, with some drivers tending to speed before Iftar (the breaking of the fast), while others may experience fatigue and reduced concentration due to fasting, thus increasing the risk of traffic accidents. This guide aims to address these challenges by providing practical advice and guidance specifically designed for this period.
Guide content and objectives
The authority explained that the “Safe Roads Guide” includes a comprehensive set of tips and guidelines for road users, explaining the meanings of key traffic and directional signs to ensure understanding and compliance. The guide focuses on raising awareness among drivers about the importance of regular vehicle maintenance before traveling, adhering to speed limits, maintaining a safe following distance, avoiding mobile phone use while driving, and getting sufficient rest to avoid driving while fatigued.
Expected impact within Saudi Vision 2030
This initiative falls under a broader strategy adopted by the General Authority for Roads, which is tasked with regulating and overseeing the roads sector to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030. Through this strategy, the Kingdom aims to elevate the quality of its road infrastructure to reach sixth place globally and, more importantly, reduce the traffic fatality rate to less than 5 deaths per 100,000 people by 2030. Domestically, the initiative is expected to contribute to reducing the number of accidents and injuries during Ramadan, thus saving lives and property. Internationally, ensuring the safety of pilgrims and visitors enhances the Kingdom's reputation as a safe and reliable destination for religious tourism and supports its efforts in serving the Two Holy Mosques and their visitors.
