A Saudi Ramadan initiative strengthens bonds of brotherhood in Russia
As part of its ongoing efforts to serve Islam and Muslims worldwide, the Saudi Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance, represented by the Embassy of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques in Moscow, launched the “Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ Gift of Dates” program and the “Iftar for Fasting People” program in the Russian Federation. This annual initiative, coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, aims to reach more than 10,000 Muslims in 10 Russian regions, distributing 5 tons of premium dates.
Historical background and religious context
The distribution of dates and the provision of iftar meals are integral parts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's religious and humanitarian diplomacy, which gains particular momentum during Ramadan. These initiatives are a long-standing annual tradition reflecting the Kingdom's leading role as the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. Dates hold a special place in Islamic tradition, as it is recommended for those fasting to break their fast with them, following the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), thus imbuing this gift with profound spiritual significance for Muslims. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs oversees the implementation of these programs globally, underscoring the Kingdom's mission to promote the values of Islamic solidarity and compassion.
Details of the launch and local impact
An official inauguration ceremony was held at the Saudi Embassy in Moscow, attended by prominent figures from both sides, including the Deputy Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and officials from the Religious Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation, reflecting the depth of coordination and cooperation between the two countries. The Iftar (fast-breaking) program was also launched at the Martyrs' Mosque in Moscow, in the presence of religious and community leaders. Locally, this initiative contributes to supporting the Muslim community in Russia, which is one of the largest Muslim communities in Europe, and helps them perform their religious rites with ease and peace of mind. It also strengthens the positive ties between the Saudi Embassy and the local community.
International significance and impact of the initiative
The impact of these programs is not limited to Russia alone, but is part of a broad global network of Saudi aid. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs oversees the implementation of a date distribution program in more than 120 countries and a program to provide iftar meals for fasting Muslims in 70 countries worldwide during Ramadan this year. This widespread reach embodies the Kingdom's humanitarian and pioneering role on the international stage and reflects its message of moderation and tolerance. In this context, Abdulaziz Al-Harbi, the embassy's Islamic affairs official, affirmed that these projects aim to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and solidarity among Muslims, reject extremism and violence, and reinforce the values of mercy advocated by the true Islamic faith.
