The Saudi Commission for Literature, Publishing and Translation is leading the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's extensive participation in the 57th Cairo International Book Fair, organized by the Egyptian General Book Organization. The fair is scheduled to run from January 21 to February 3, with the Kingdom participating with a delegation comprising 10 government entities, reflecting the deep cultural ties between the two brotherly nations.
The importance of the event and its historical context
The Cairo International Book Fair is one of the most important and prestigious book fairs in the Middle East and the world, serving as an annual cultural event that brings together publishers, intellectuals, and readers from across the region. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's participation in this major international event reflects its ongoing commitment to strengthening Saudi cultural presence on the international stage and underscores the strong historical and cultural ties between the Kingdom and the Arab Republic of Egypt. The Saudi pavilion has consistently attracted considerable attention from visitors in previous editions of the fair due to its rich content and diverse activities.
Enhancing cultural presence and supporting Saudi publishers
The CEO of the Literature, Publishing and Translation Commission, Dr. Abdul Latif bin Abdulaziz Al-Wasil, explained that this participation is an extension of the Commission's ongoing efforts to enhance the Kingdom's cultural and literary presence at both the regional and international levels. He emphasized that the primary objective is to showcase Saudi Arabia's rich cultural heritage and reaffirm the Kingdom's leading role in the global cultural landscape, in line with the goals of the National Culture Strategy.
Al-Wasel explained that the Authority has dedicated all its resources to supporting the participation of Saudi publishing houses, not only in local book fairs but also in international events. Through this presence, the Authority aims to open new horizons for Saudi publishers, market the Kingdom's literary and intellectual output internationally, and attract international publishing houses to participate in future Saudi book fairs by building strategic partnerships and strengthening channels of joint cultural cooperation.
A rich and diverse cultural program
The Kingdom's participation extends beyond simply displaying books; it also includes an accompanying cultural program organized by the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission. This program features a distinguished group of Saudi writers, intellectuals, and poets who will participate in a variety of literary and cultural seminars and poetry readings. The program aims to highlight the active role of Saudi Arabia in the Arab cultural landscape and contribute to enriching cultural dialogue and knowledge exchange with the exhibition's broad audience.
Participating government agencies
Ten government entities are joining forces to represent the Kingdom at this global event, under the leadership of the Literature, Publishing, and Translation Commission. These entities include: the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah and Guidance; the King Salman Global Academy for the Arabic Language; the Saudi Cultural Attaché in the Arab Republic of Egypt; the King Abdulaziz Public Library; the King Fahd National Library; the King Fahd Complex for Printing the Holy Qur'an; the Arab Observatory for Translation; the Saudi Laboratory for Criticism; and the Publishing Association. This institutional diversity reflects the comprehensiveness of the Saudi cultural landscape and the integrated roles of those dedicated to serving culture and the Arabic language.
