Saudi Arabian football has witnessed tremendous qualitative development in recent years, with the Saudi Professional League (SPL) transforming into a global destination that attracts the world's top football stars, particularly those from Africa. This transformation has not only strengthened domestic competition but has also had a clear impact on the international stage, most notably in the Africa Cup of Nations, where Saudi league players have made a significant mark on the podium.
The Senegalese trio and the continental title
According to recent data, the Saudi League has made a significant impact on the African scene with Senegal's victory in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, after the Lions of Teranga defeated Morocco in the final. Stars from the Saudi League played a pivotal role in this achievement, including Al-Nassr's Sadio Mane, Al-Hilal's defensive stalwart Kalidou Koulibaly, and Al-Ahli's goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. This brings the total number of players who have won the title while playing for Saudi clubs to 12 throughout history.
Ivorian and Algerian dominance with a Saudi flavor
Looking back to previous editions, specifically the 2023 edition, Saudi League stars played a pivotal role in the Ivory Coast national team's return to prominence. The trio of Seko Fofana and Ghislain Konan (Al-Nassr) and Franck Kessié (Al-Ahli) led the "Elephants" to victory, confirming that the Saudi League maintains players' physical and technical readiness for the highest competitive levels.
In the 2019 edition hosted by Egypt, the Saudi presence was crucial in Algeria's victory and their second title win. The "Desert Warriors" squad included three key players from the Saudi league: veteran goalkeeper Rais M'Bolhi (Al-Ettifaq), goalkeeper Azzedine Doukha (Al-Raed), and solid defender Djamel Benlamri (Al-Shabab), all of whom contributed to the victory over Senegal in the final.
Historical roots: From Cameroon to the Pharaohs
The relationship between the Saudi League and African championship titles is not a recent development, but rather extends back decades. In the 2002 edition in Mali, the Saudi League was represented by Cameroonian Joseph Ndo, a player for Al-Khaleej Club, who lifted the trophy with the "Indomitable Lions".
The Saudi League also had its share in the golden era of the Egyptian national team; Hassan Mustafa won the 2008 title while defending the colors of Al-Wahda, and he was followed by the captain Hossam Ghaly in the 2010 edition in Angola while playing for Al-Nasr, confirming that the Saudi stadiums were and still are a fertile environment for creating champions and maintaining their international brilliance.
