In a humanitarian gesture reflecting the depth of diplomatic relations and strategic partnership between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the People’s Republic of China, the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, sent two separate cables of condolence and sympathy to His Excellency President Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China, regarding the victims of the tragic fire that broke out in a residential complex in Hong Kong.
Details of the tragic accident
On April 10, 2024, a catastrophic fire engulfed the New Lucky House residential building in Hong Kong's densely populated Jordan district. The fire was classified as a Level 3 blaze on the city's fire severity scale. The incident resulted in the deaths of five people and injuries to dozens more, causing profound shock and grief within the local community. The building, known for its numerous subdivided apartments and low-cost housing units, complicated evacuation and rescue operations and sparked a broader debate about safety standards in the city's older buildings.
Text of condolence and sympathy telegrams
The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques’ telegram read: “We have learned of the news of a fire breaking out in a residential complex in Hong Kong, and the resulting deaths, injuries, and missing persons. While we share your grief over this tragedy, we send to you, the families of the deceased, and your friendly people our deepest condolences and sincere sympathy, wishing for the safe return of the missing to their families, a speedy recovery for the injured, and that you may never experience any harm.”.
For his part, His Highness the Crown Prince expressed similar sentiments in his telegram, saying: “I have been informed of the outbreak of a fire in a residential complex in Hong Kong, and the resulting deaths, injuries, and missing persons. I express to Your Excellency, to the families of the deceased, and to your friendly people my deepest condolences and sincere sympathy, wishing the missing persons a safe return to their families, a speedy recovery for the injured, and that you may not experience any harm.”.
The importance of gestures in the context of bilateral relations
This diplomatic initiative underscores the strength of Saudi-Chinese relations, which have witnessed remarkable development in recent years across all sectors. These relations extend beyond economic cooperation and energy trade to encompass increasing political and strategic coordination. Such humanitarian gestures during times of crisis are a cornerstone for strengthening ties between peoples and governments, demonstrating the Kingdom's solidarity and support for its international partners in the face of adversity. These messages also reflect the Saudi leadership's commitment to solidifying the Kingdom's role as an active and influential force on the international stage, one that values humanitarian relations as much as it prioritizes shared interests.
