The Saudi leadership offered its condolences to South Korean President Yun Suk-yeol on the death of the former prime minister, in a diplomatic gesture reflecting the depth of historical relations and strategic partnership between the two countries.

Condolence messages from King Salman and the Crown Prince

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and His Royal Highness Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Prime Minister, sent cables of condolence to His Excellency President Yun Sok-yeol of the Republic of Korea on the death of one of its former prime ministers. In their cables, the Saudi leadership expressed its deepest condolences and sincere sympathy to the South Korean President, the family of the deceased, and the friendly Korean people on this painful loss.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques sent a telegram stating: “We received the news of the passing of the former Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea, and we extend to Your Excellency, the family of the deceased, and your friendly people our deepest condolences and sincere sympathies.” Similarly, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince expressed his profound condolences and sympathies in his telegram, wishing the Korean President continued health and well-being and that he may be spared any harm.

The depth of historical relations between the Kingdom and South Korea

This diplomatic gesture reflects the depth of the strategic and historical relations between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of South Korea, which span more than six decades. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1962, and since then, the partnership has evolved to encompass numerous fields beyond the traditional energy sector. South Korea is a key economic partner for the Kingdom, with its companies having contributed to the implementation of many of the Kingdom's mega development and infrastructure projects over the years.

Under Saudi Vision 2030 , bilateral relations have witnessed a qualitative leap, as cooperation has expanded to include promising sectors such as advanced technology, defense industries, renewable energy, culture and entertainment, opening new horizons for a sustainable strategic partnership that serves the interests of the two friendly countries.

Growing strategic partnership

South Korea was among the first countries to establish a strategic partnership with the Kingdom within the framework of Vision 2030. The “Saudi-Korean Joint Committee for Vision 2030” was established as a key platform to enhance cooperation across various sectors. The committee monitors the implementation of joint projects and identifies new opportunities for collaboration, making the relationship between the two countries a model for international partnerships based on shared interests and mutual respect.

The diplomatic significance of exchanging messages of condolence

The exchange of condolences between heads of state on such occasions is not merely a matter of protocol, but carries significant political weight. It underscores the enduring bonds of friendship and mutual respect between nations, and strengthens solidarity during difficult times. In the context of Saudi-Korean relations, this message reinforces the strategic partnership and affirms the Kingdom's commitment to honoring the political figures of friendly nations, thus contributing to building bridges of trust and cooperation at both the regional and international levels, and reflecting the Kingdom's position as an active and influential force in global diplomacy.
