Saudi Arabia’s land transport sector achieved an exceptional feat during the holy month of Ramadan, with the Public Transport Authority announcing the successful delivery of over 15 million shipments during the first 20 days of the month. This impressive figure underscores the high level of preparedness and exceptional capacity of the land transport fleet, which exceeds half a million trucks, in securing the Kingdom’s markets, ensuring the sustainability of supply chains, and meeting consumer needs during a period of peak demand.
The roots of development in logistics infrastructure
This achievement was not a sudden occurrence, but rather the culmination of decades of strategic planning and intensive investment in infrastructure. Historically, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recognized the importance of its geographical location as a crossroads of three continents, prompting it to build a sophisticated road network spanning more than 73,000 kilometers. This vast network not only connected the Kingdom's expansive regions but also established a solid foundation that enabled the logistics sector to grow and flourish, ultimately contributing to the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to transform the Kingdom into a leading global logistics hub based on cutting-edge technologies.
The role of the land transport sector in Saudi Arabia during the seasons
In detailing this active movement, Engineer Abdulmajid Al-Tassan, Vice President of the Regulatory Sector at the Public Transport Authority, explained that the postal parcel sector experiences unprecedented growth during the Ramadan and Eid seasons. He emphasized that the Authority closely monitors the commitment of licensed companies to the highest service quality standards to ensure that shipments reach their recipients efficiently. This system relies on a large and diverse fleet operating under the umbrella of more than 18,000 licensed freight transport companies. This fleet has proven to be the main artery of logistics services, having contributed last year alone to transporting more than 17 million shipments between various cities and governorates across the Kingdom.
Economic dimensions and ensuring market stability
This smooth flow of goods is of paramount importance and has a direct impact on the local and regional economy. Locally, this intensive activity ensures price stability and the uninterrupted availability of essential and consumer goods, thus bolstering the confidence of both consumers and investors. Regionally, this system plays a vital role in connecting the Saudi market with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, facilitating intra-regional trade and supporting regional economic integration. The ability to manage this massive volume of shipments in record time reflects the resilience of the Saudi economy and its capacity to adapt to changes and address logistical challenges with complete efficiency.
Digital transformation and future connectivity projects
To build on these successes, the Public Transport Authority's efforts extend beyond its operational role to include legislative and regulatory functions in partnership with the public and private sectors. As part of its ongoing development, the Authority launched a unified guide for licensees through the "Logistics" platform to facilitate access to transport services. The Kingdom looks forward with great enthusiasm to the future through promising projects, most notably the anticipated Gulf Railway project for passengers and freight, slated for completion by 2030, along with the development of maritime logistics corridors connecting ports in the Eastern and Western regions. These integrated steps ensure the smooth and efficient flow of goods to markets and border crossings, solidifying the Kingdom's position as a significant economic and logistical power on the international stage.
