The Saudi Arabian national handball team continued its strong performances and impressive winning streak in the 22nd Asian Men's Handball Championship, a qualifier for the World Championship, after securing a valuable and well-deserved victory over Japan with a score of 27-24. This came during a thrilling match between the two teams on Saturday evening, as part of the second round of the preliminary stage in Group D, held at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex in Kuwait.
The match was highly competitive and tactically astute from the outset, but the Saudi national team gradually asserted its dominance, securing the first half with a score of 12-9. Despite a close score in the first fifteen minutes, during which Saudi Arabia led by a single goal (6-5), their solid defense and focused attack allowed them to widen the gap to 7-6 by the 22nd minute, before finishing the first half with a comfortable three-goal lead.
In the second half, the national team continued to dictate the pace, widening the gap to five goals after 12 minutes (19-14). They maintained this lead until the 22nd minute (26-21). Despite the Japanese "Samurai" team's attempts to rally and reduce the deficit to (26-22) in the final minutes, the experience of the Saudi players proved decisive, ending the match with a score of (27-24).
This victory holds significant strategic importance for the national team, as they entered the match with high morale following their crucial opening win against the strong Iranian team (24-22). With this victory, the Green Falcons have a firm foothold in their quest to top Group D, making their task easier in the upcoming main rounds of the tournament, which features 15 teams and runs until January 29th.
These positive results are the fruit of a comprehensive and long-term preparation program overseen by the Saudi Handball Federation. This program included six preparatory phases, domestic and international training camps, and friendly matches to enhance the players' physical and technical readiness. Fan support also played a significant role, with the Federation organizing buses to transport supporters to Kuwait to cheer on the national team. This reflects the great interest in this continental competition, which is considered a gateway to the world stage.
The national team is scheduled to conclude its preliminary round matches with a match against its Australian counterpart on Monday, January 19, in a match in which the Green Falcons will seek to confirm their lead with a perfect score.
