KAUST hosted the Saudi-German Innovation Summit to promote partnership in the fields of sustainable energy and artificial intelligence, and to accelerate the growth of startups between the two countries.

In a move reflecting the depth of the strategic relationship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Federal Republic of Germany, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) hosted the Saudi-German Innovation Summit. The event was attended by high-level dignitaries, including His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Minister of Energy and Chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, and the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Ms. Katharina Reiche, who was on an official visit to the Kingdom.

This summit comes within a historical context of robust economic cooperation between the two countries, with Germany being a major trading partner for the Kingdom and a global leader in industry and technology. This cooperation aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which seeks to diversify the national economy away from oil by investing in promising sectors such as advanced technology, renewable energy, and artificial intelligence, making the partnership with Germany a strategic choice for achieving these ambitious objectives.

The summit was hosted by KAUST President Professor Edward Byrne, with the participation of leading government officials, industry leaders, and representatives from startup ecosystems and research institutions. Discussions focused on accelerating research-led innovation and translating it into commercial applications that contribute to economic resilience in vital areas of shared interest, most notably sustainable energy, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.

In his speech, Professor Byrne emphasized the complementarity between the two countries, saying: “Saudi Arabia and Germany have complementary strengths for the next phase of innovation in the energy and industrial sectors. Germany’s leadership in industrial engineering and scaling up technologies complements closely with the Kingdom’s accelerating pace of investment in research-led innovation and new entrepreneurial ventures. KAUST is at the heart of this intersection, transforming scientific outputs into applicable technologies and startups.”.

On the sidelines of the summit, a series of Memoranda of Understanding were signed between KAUST and several leading German institutions supporting entrepreneurship: BRYCK Startup Alliance, Start2 Group GmbH, and SWX Innovators GmbH. These agreements aim to build a strong bridge between the startup ecosystems of the two countries, support early-stage companies to facilitate their market access, and enhance technical and commercial cooperation.

The anticipated impact of these partnerships extends beyond bilateral borders, contributing to accelerating the global transition to clean energy and enhancing the economic security of both countries through joint innovation. This summit also serves as a model for international cooperation that bridges scientific research with industrial application, opening new horizons for Saudi and German startups to grow and expand in global markets.
