A strong comeback for Saudi cinema on the international stage
In a move reflecting the growing international presence of Saudi cinema, the Film Commission announced the organization of the third edition of the “Saudi Film Nights” event in the People’s Republic of China for the second time, during the period from November 28 to December 7, 2025. During this event, four Saudi feature films will be screened in three major Chinese cities: Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu, in an initiative aimed at supporting Saudi talent and strengthening cultural exchange between the two countries.
The context of the cinematic renaissance in the Kingdom
This event comes amidst a comprehensive cinematic renaissance in Saudi Arabia, a key pillar of Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the economy and enrich the cultural landscape. Since the reopening of cinemas in 2018 after a decades-long hiatus, the industry has witnessed rapid growth, supported by government entities such as the Saudi Film Commission, established in 2020. Through its international initiatives, such as "Saudi Film Nights," the Commission seeks to build bridges of creative exchange, present authentic Saudi narratives to a global audience, challenge stereotypes, and showcase the Kingdom's new, sophisticated image.
Strategic importance and deepening of Saudi-Chinese relations
Choosing China as the destination for the second time is a strategic move reflecting the depth of the growing relationship between the two countries. This edition coincides with the declaration of 2025 as the “Saudi-Chinese Year of Cultural Cooperation,” giving the event added momentum. The significance of these screenings extends beyond the artistic realm to encompass economic and diplomatic dimensions. The Chinese market is one of the world’s largest film markets, and showcasing Saudi films there presents a valuable opportunity for filmmakers to explore new avenues for co-distribution and future production. It also contributes to strengthening the Kingdom’s soft power by presenting its culture and human stories to a broad Chinese audience.
A rich program and direct cultural dialogue
The program includes a diverse selection of films reflecting the richness and diversity of contemporary Saudi cinema, namely “Hopal,” “Salma and Qamar,” “Abd,” and “Ambulance.” To enrich the experience, open discussion sessions will be held after each screening, bringing together the filmmakers with the Chinese audience, critics, and media. These sessions offer a unique opportunity to exchange ideas and discuss the issues raised by the films, deepening mutual understanding and fostering cultural dialogue between the two nations. Prestigious cinemas in the three cities have been selected to ensure a high-quality viewing experience befitting Saudi cinematic productions.
A future vision for the Saudi film industry
The organization of “Saudi Film Nights” in China embodies the ambitious vision of the Saudi Film Commission, which aims to solidify the position of Saudi cinema on the international map. By showcasing the creativity of national talent, the Commission aims not only to promote films but also to build the Kingdom’s reputation as a leading regional hub for the film industry, capable of attracting global investment, hosting major productions, and contributing effectively to global cultural dialogue through the language of cinema.
