The Saudi Fashion Authority concluded its "Reviving Heritage" initiative to train designers on integrating traditional crafts with contemporary design, as part of Vision 2030's efforts to promote culture and fashion.

In a strategic move aimed at promoting Saudi cultural identity on the global stage, the Saudi Fashion Commission successfully concluded its unique initiative, “Reviving Saudi Heritage: Arts and Crafts.” This initiative was more than just a training program; it served as a bridge between the authenticity of the past and the creativity of the future, empowering a new generation of Saudi designers by equipping them with the tools to integrate time-honored traditional crafts into contemporary and innovative designs.

Cultural context and national vision

This initiative is at the heart of the major transformations taking place in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia within the framework of Vision 2030, which places paramount importance on preserving and developing its rich cultural heritage as a strategic asset. The Fashion Commission was established in 2020 as one of the cultural bodies affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, with the aim of regulating and developing the fashion sector in the Kingdom and transforming it into a significant economic and creative driver. Saudi heritage, with its immense geographical and cultural diversity in fashion and handicrafts, is among the Kingdom's treasures that the Commission seeks to showcase globally, from the UNESCO-listed "Qatt Al-Asiri" embroidery to the traditional "Sadu" weaving and the intricate Najdi patterns.

Intensive training program and strategic partnership

The initiative took place at Fikr, the Authority’s creative space, which has become a vibrant hub for creatives. Over five intensive days, participating designers engaged in a series of specialized workshops led by industry experts. The training focused on modern applications of traditional embroidery techniques and intricate beadwork, as well as a special workshop on the creative use of Swarovski crystals, giving designers the opportunity to combine global luxury with a local heritage touch. The program went beyond the technical aspects, also including conceptual guidance that helped participants draw inspiration from the stories behind Saudi cultural elements and transform them into unique fashion pieces that tell a story.

From inspiration to the podium

Following the training period, participants worked on developing their final designs, inspired by Saudi traditions, benefiting from individual evaluation sessions provided by experts from the global brand Swarovski. To enhance the professionalism of their work, the Authority provided the designers with access to a fully equipped photography studio. At a closing ceremony held at the Fikr headquarters, the participants proudly presented their completed designs to a panel of expert judges. Designer Rula Mutlaq Al-Anzi was awarded first place in the competition, in recognition of the excellence of her design and her ability to achieve a perfect balance between authenticity and modernity.

Impact extends globally

The initiative's success extended beyond local recognition, opening international horizons for Saudi talent. Five top designers—Rula Mutlaq Al-Anzi, Abdullah Al-Barqi, Latifa Al-Buajan, Hadeel Abdulaziz, and Arwa Al-Suhaim—were nominated to participate in the Swarovski International Academy Competition. This nomination represents global recognition of the quality of Saudi talent and provides them with an invaluable opportunity to showcase their work on an international platform. Supporting local talent and elevating traditional crafts remains a core part of the Fashion Commission's mission. Through these initiatives, the Commission is laying a solid foundation for a thriving and sustainable Saudi fashion ecosystem that celebrates its rich heritage while embracing global innovation.
