A new agreement between Saudi Arabia and the European Union to fund a water project worth 9 million riyals in Marib, with the aim of improving the lives of thousands of Yemenis affected by the conflict.

Strategic partnership to support the water sector in Yemen

In a new step to bolster stability and support livelihoods in Yemen, the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen (SDRPY) and the European Union (EU) announced a joint effort to launch a vital project to improve access to water in Marib Governorate. This strategic partnership underscores the shared international commitment to addressing the country's escalating humanitarian crisis, with funding exceeding SAR 9 million, aimed at improving the lives of thousands of Yemenis.

The water crisis in Yemen: a critical humanitarian and development context

Yemen has been suffering for years from one of the world's worst humanitarian crises, exacerbated by the conflict that began in 2014. This conflict has led to the systematic destruction of vital infrastructure, most notably water and sanitation networks. As a result, millions of Yemenis face extreme difficulty accessing clean and safe drinking water, leading to the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera and placing an enormous burden on an already fragile health system.

Marib Governorate, which hosts a huge number of internally displaced people fleeing conflict zones, is among the most affected areas. The massive population increase has placed immense pressure on already scarce water resources, making water sector support projects not just a development necessity, but a lifeline for both local residents and displaced people.

Agreement details: Direct support for 9 areas in Marib

As part of these efforts, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, the European Union, and the Silah Development Foundation as the implementing partner. The project, entitled “Enhancing Water Security in Marib Governorate,” aims to provide sustainable solutions to the water scarcity problem.

The project will cover nine vital areas within three main districts: Marib Valley, Marib City, and Harib. Thousands of families are expected to benefit from this support, directly contributing to improved living and health conditions. The signing ceremony took place in the presence of the Saudi Program Supervisor, Ambassador Mohammed bin Saeed Al Jaber, and the European Union Ambassador to Yemen, Patrick Simonnet, reflecting the high level of coordination and commitment from both parties.

Strategic importance and expected impact of the project

This project has multifaceted importance that extends beyond simply providing water. At the local level , it will reduce disease rates and alleviate the burden on women and children who often have to travel long distances to fetch water. The project will also strengthen the resilience of local communities and support limited agricultural activities, thus contributing to food security.

At the regional and international levels , this partnership between Saudi Arabia and the European Union exemplifies effective international cooperation in conflict zones. It underscores the shift in international support for Yemen from mere emergency humanitarian aid to a focus on sustainable development projects that address the root causes of the problems. This cooperation also strengthens diplomatic efforts aimed at achieving stability in Yemen and sends a clear message about the importance of reconstruction and building the capacity of Yemeni institutions to achieve lasting peace.
