In a strategic move aimed at enhancing governance and operational efficiency in the sports sector, His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal, President of the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee, approved the merger of the Saudi Polo Federation and the Saudi Equestrian Federation into a single new entity called the “Saudi Equestrian and Polo Federation.” The new federation will be headed by His Highness Prince Abdullah bin Fahd bin Abdullah, who possesses extensive experience in this field.
This decision follows the completion of all necessary regulatory requirements and procedures, and falls within the framework of corporate governance adopted by the Saudi Arabian Olympic and Paralympic Committee. The merger primarily aims to enhance the financial sustainability of both federations, improve administrative and technical performance, and unify efforts to develop equestrian and polo sports in the Kingdom, in line with the ambitious goals of Saudi Vision 2030 for the sports sector.
Historical context and importance of horsemanship in Saudi Arabia
Equestrian sports are deeply intertwined with the history and culture of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula. The Arabian horse is an integral part of the national heritage and a symbol of strength and authenticity. The Saudi Equestrian Federation was established decades ago to serve as the governing body for show jumping, endurance riding, and dressage. Saudi riders have achieved remarkable international successes, most notably the bronze medal in the team show jumping event at the 2012 London Olympics. Meanwhile, the Saudi Polo Federation was founded in 2017 with the aim of reviving this ancient sport, known as the "Sport of Kings," and organizing local and international tournaments befitting its stature, such as the Al-Ula Desert Polo Championship.
The expected impact of the merger on the sports scene
This merger is expected to have a multifaceted positive impact. Domestically, the consolidation of administrative and financial resources will lead to best operational practices and provide an integrated environment for developing young talent and professional athletes in both sports. It will also contribute to the development of unified strategic plans to expand the player base and attract new investment to the sector. Regionally and internationally, the creation of a unified and robust entity will enhance the Kingdom's standing within relevant international federations, such as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) and the International Polo Federation (FIP). This new entity will bolster Saudi Arabia's ability to host and organize major international championships, solidifying its role as a leading destination for global sports tourism and prioritizing the technical and organizational needs of athletes to ensure further achievements worthy of the Kingdom's name.
