Learn about the Saudi national team’s group in the 2026 World Cup, which includes Spain, Uruguay, and Cape Verde, and details of the presence of the opposing players in the Saudi Roshan League.

On a global football evening held at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the draw for the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals placed the Saudi national team in a challenging Group H. Alongside the Green Falcons, the group includes formidable opponents such as Spain, the 2010 World Cup champions, Uruguay, the first-ever World Cup winners, and Cape Verde, a team that has seen remarkable improvement in recent years.

The importance of the event and the historical context

The 2026 World Cup holds exceptional and historic significance as it marks the first edition to feature 48 teams instead of 32, and is co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Saudi Arabia's placement in this group presents a true test of its ability to compete with the world's best, particularly against Spain, renowned for their "tiki-taka" style, and Uruguay, a team that combines skill and physical strength. This necessitates top-level technical and physical preparation.

The Cape Verde trio in Saudi stadiums

One of the interesting paradoxes revealed by the draw is the direct connection between the Cape Verde national team and the Saudi Professional League for the 2025/2026 season. Three players from this national team are active in Saudi clubs, giving the Saudi national team's coaching staff a golden opportunity to closely and regularly monitor some of the opposing players.

1. Bruno Varela... the experienced goalkeeper

Goalkeeper Bruno Varela stands out as one of the key players, and he is the only one of the three currently representing Cape Verde as a regular starter. Varela made his decision to represent his country of origin in 2023 after a successful career with the Portuguese youth national teams. Internationally, Varela has made eight appearances, conceding 13 goals and keeping one clean sheet.

In the Saudi league, the 31-year-old goalkeeper joined Al-Fateh from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães. He made nine appearances for the club in the Roshan League, conceding 14 goals and keeping one clean sheet, receiving a single yellow card in 810 minutes of play.

2. Jefferson Ramos... The young talent

Al-Fateh also signed young left winger Jefferson Ramos (20 years old) from Portuguese club União Coimbra. Despite his young age, his appearances have been limited, having played only two matches this season without scoring or assisting. Ramos played for eight minutes against Al-Nassr in a match his team lost 5-0, and he also played 32 minutes against Al-Hilal in the King's Cup quarter-final.

3. Wesley Delgado... the ambitious striker

The third name is Wesley Delgado, who joined Al-Fateh from the same Portuguese club (Uniao Coimbra). Delgado is adept at playing as a center forward and right winger. He has participated in 4 matches with Al-Fateh, totaling 161 minutes, most notably starting for 90 minutes against Al-Hilal in the ninth round, in addition to his appearances in the King's Cup against Al-Jabalain and Al-Riyadh, but he has yet to score a goal.

The presence of these players in the Roshan League is evidence of the purchasing power and diversity that the Saudi League now enjoys, and it also puts the cards of the Cape Verde national team relatively exposed to the eyes of the Saudi national team scouts before the anticipated confrontation in the World Cup.
