On a global football evening hosted by the Kennedy Convention Center in Washington, D.C., the outlines of the competition for the biggest sporting event were drawn, as the draw for the 2026 World Cup resulted in the Saudi national team being placed in Group H, a group described by analysts as a tough one due to the presence of giants from Europe and South America, namely: Spain, Uruguay, and the Cape Verde national team.
The 2026 edition holds exceptional historical significance as it is the first to feature 48 teams instead of 32, and will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The Saudi national team faces a formidable challenge against Spain, the 2010 World Cup champions known for their "tiki-taka" style of play and possession-based football, as well as the tenacious Uruguayan team, the first-ever World Cup champions, renowned for their physical strength and fighting spirit, known as "grinta.".
In terms of technical preparations and opponent monitoring, the Saudi national team's coaching staff has an additional advantage regarding their third opponent, Cape Verde (the Blue Sharks). The current 2025/26 Saudi Professional League season features three professional players from this national team, making it easier to observe and closely assess their performance. These players are Jefferson Ramos and Wesley Delgado, who play for Al-Fateh, and Bruno Varela, the goalkeeper for Al-Hazm.
Bruno Varela... the international goalkeeper
Goalkeeper Bruno Varela stands out as a key player, being the only one of the trio to feature regularly for Cape Verde. Varela made the decision to represent his country of origin in 2023 after a successful career with Portugal's youth national teams. During his international career with the "Blue Sharks," he has made eight appearances, conceding 13 goals and keeping one clean sheet in 720 minutes of play.
On the local level, the 31-year-old goalkeeper joined Al-Fateh (according to the context of the news) from Vitoria Guimaraes of Portugal in the summer transfer window, and participated in 9 matches in the Roshan League, during which he conceded 14 goals and kept a clean sheet once.
Al-Fateh's attacking duo
On the attacking side, Al-Fateh signed young left winger Jefferson Ramos (20 years old) from Portuguese club União Coimbra. Despite his talent, he has only featured in two matches this season without scoring any goals, playing just a few minutes against Al-Nassr and Al-Hilal in games that ended in heavy defeats for his team.
The third player is Wesley Delgado, who also joined from the same Portuguese club. Delgado plays as a striker and right winger, and has featured in four league matches, totaling 161 minutes, without contributing any goals. He appeared against Al-Hazm and Al-Hilal, in addition to his appearances in the King's Cup against Al-Jabalain and Al-Riyadh.
The presence of these players in the Saudi League gives the "Green Falcons" a golden opportunity to study the playing style of the Cape Verdean football school, which may be a decisive factor in winning points in this crucial group stage match.
