The National Center for Meteorology reveals its winter forecast for Saudi Arabia. Prepare for cool, but not freezing, weather and heavy rain starting Sunday, with details on temperatures and affected areas.

Weather forecast in Saudi Arabia: Mild winter and expected rain

The official spokesperson for the National Center for Meteorology, Hussein Al-Qahtani, revealed the forecast for the upcoming winter season in Saudi Arabia, confirming that initial indicators point to a cold winter, but one that will not reach extreme cold. Al-Qahtani explained that the current stable and pleasant weather will gradually change with the official start of winter meteorologically next Monday, when a noticeable drop in temperatures will begin.

December is the rainy month par excellence

According to climate reports issued by the center, December is expected to be a rainy month across most of the Kingdom. Al-Qahtani indicated that rainfall amounts may be around the normal average or slightly above, especially in the northern regions. This rainy period will be accompanied by noticeable fluctuations in temperatures, with a relative decrease expected in the coming weeks. He added that the first significant rainfall of December will begin, God willing, next Sunday, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in several areas, including Medina, Hail, the highlands of Mecca, and parts of its southern coast.

The climatic context of winter in the Kingdom

Winter in Saudi Arabia is a vital period eagerly awaited by many, not only for the pleasant, cool weather after a long, hot summer, but also for its environmental and economic importance. Historically, rain-fed agriculture and grazing lands have relied heavily on winter rains, known locally as "Al-Wasam" rains. These rains contribute to the regeneration of desert vegetation, replenish groundwater, and fill dams, thus supporting the country's water and food security. The Kingdom is influenced by diverse climatic patterns, including Mediterranean depressions that bring rain to the northern and central regions, and Red Sea influences that affect the western coasts and highlands.

Importance and expected effects of the weather conditions

These forecasts have far-reaching implications across various sectors. Locally, the rains contribute to improved air quality and reduced dust storms, while also revitalizing the parks and natural areas frequented by citizens and residents. Conversely, the heavy rainfall necessitates heightened preparedness from relevant authorities, such as the Civil Defense and municipalities, to address any potential flash floods and water accumulation in urban areas. On the agricultural front, these rains are a boon for farmers, supporting the growth of winter crops and providing essential irrigation water. Al-Qahtani described 2025 as a “moderate year” thus far, with no extreme weather events recorded, despite the recent heavy rainfall in Mecca.

Al-Qahtani concluded his remarks by emphasizing that the center is monitoring weather developments around the clock and issuing the necessary reports and warnings, urging everyone to follow information from official sources to ensure their safety.
