In an urgent humanitarian response, the head of Somalia’s National Disaster Management Agency, Mahmoud Moalim Abdullahi, confirmed that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was the first country to officially respond to the humanitarian appeal launched by the Federal Republic of Somalia to address the severe drought crisis plaguing the country. This swift response came through its humanitarian arm, the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, to provide urgent relief assistance to those affected.
Background to the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa
Somalia, like other countries in the Horn of Africa, suffers from recurring and devastating droughts, exacerbated in recent years by global climate change. Successive seasons of meager rainfall have depleted water resources, degraded agricultural land, and led to the death of vast numbers of livestock, which are the lifeblood of a large segment of the population. This natural disaster not only threatens food security but also pushes millions of people to the brink of famine and forces them to flee their homes in search of water and food, creating a complex humanitarian crisis that requires immediate and coordinated international intervention.
The importance of the Saudi response and its expected impact
The announcement of the Saudi aid came during a meeting between the Somali official and the Ambassador of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques to Somalia, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Mawlid, and the Director of the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center's branch in Africa, Yazid Al-Hamoud. During the meeting, they discussed the repercussions of the drought and mechanisms to expedite the delivery of urgent aid, which in its first phase targets approximately 84,000 of the most vulnerable individuals. This aid is not merely temporary relief; it is a lifeline that will contribute to saving lives and alleviating the suffering of families who have lost everything. Locally, these efforts will help stabilize affected communities and reduce waves of internal displacement. Regionally and internationally, the Kingdom's initiative sets an example and encourages other international partners to expedite the provision of necessary support, highlighting its pivotal role as a key player in global humanitarian work.
Thanks and appreciation for the Kingdom's humanitarian role
The head of the Somali National Disaster Management Agency expressed his deep gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center, for this immediate humanitarian response. He emphasized that this assistance is a cornerstone of the efforts to rescue those affected, praising Saudi Arabia's unwavering support for the Somali people during various crises and hardships. For his part, Ambassador Al-Mawlid commended the Kingdom's relief efforts worldwide, noting that they reflect the commitment of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and his Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, to stand by brotherly and friendly nations. He also highlighted the strong historical and fraternal ties between the two countries.
