Refereeing expert Ahmed Abu Khadija sparked widespread controversy in sporting circles after commenting on the refereeing decisions in the match between the Saudi national team and their Comoros counterparts, in the second round of the group stage of the 2025 Arab Cup. Abu Khadija asserted that the Saudi team was denied a deserved penalty kick that could have changed the course of the match, which was held at the Al Bayt World Cup stadium.
In an exclusive interview with Al-Midan Al-Riyadi newspaper, Abu Khadija highlighted the incident involving striker Firas Al-Buraikan, stating: "Firas Al-Buraikan deserved a clear and undeniable penalty kick. There was a blatant and deliberate hold by the Comoros defender inside the penalty area, and I don't know the real reason behind the referee's disregard for this obvious foul." The refereeing expert added, criticizing the performance of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room: "The VAR referee should have intervened immediately and called the on-field referee to review the footage and officially award the penalty, as these errors directly affect the course of the match.".
This match comes amidst the fierce competition of the 2025 Arab Cup, hosted by Qatar, with Al Bayt Stadium being one of the most prominent architectural masterpieces of sports hosting these major matches. The tournament is of paramount importance to the Arab national teams, as it provides an ideal opportunity for technical experience and raising their level of readiness for upcoming international competitions, all while attracting massive public and media attention from across the Arab world.
Despite the refereeing controversy, the Saudi national team secured its official qualification for the next round of the competition, continuing its strong performances that confirm its status as one of the top contenders for the title. This qualification comes after a series of positive results, as the Green Falcons began their campaign with a valuable victory in the first round against their Omani counterparts, with a score of 2-1, in a match hosted at Education City Stadium, giving the players a significant morale boost to continue their journey.
The Saudi sports community is placing high hopes on this edition of the Arab Cup to revive continental and Arab glory, especially with the presence of a host of stars, led by Firas Al-Buraikan, who have proven their worth in local and international competitions. While refereeing decisions remain an integral part of the excitement of football, the demand for improved officiating and a reduction in errors continues to be a major concern for fans, ensuring complete fairness for all participating teams in this major Arab tournament.
