Saudi Arabia achieves first place globally in the value of date exports
In an achievement reflecting the depth of strategic planning and the success of agricultural development programs, the Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture, Engineer Abdulrahman Al-Fadhli, announced that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has achieved first place globally in terms of the value of date exports. This announcement came during his chairmanship of the fifth session of the International Date Council in Riyadh, where he revealed that the value of exports reached 1.7 billion riyals, while the volume of local production exceeded 1.9 million tons annually, thus solidifying the Kingdom's position as a leading power in this vital sector.
Historical background and cultural significance of date palms
The history of the Kingdom and the Arabian Peninsula is inextricably linked to the date palm, which has been more than just a source of food; it is a symbol of life, generosity, and abundance in a harsh desert environment. For generations, dates have been a staple food, a source of income, and an integral part of authentic Saudi hospitality traditions. This deep historical legacy now forms a solid foundation upon which the Kingdom has built its development of the date palm sector, utilizing the latest technologies and best agricultural practices, transforming it from a traditional sector into a globally competitive industry aligned with the goals of Vision 2030.
Impact of the achievement on the national economy and global food security
This achievement is not merely a record-breaking export figure; it represents a pivotal success within the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, which aims to diversify national income sources and reduce dependence on oil. By supporting farmers, developing supply chains, and opening new markets in 111 countries, the Kingdom has strengthened its “Saudi Dates” brand globally. Internationally, this leadership is particularly significant given the challenges facing global food security. Dates, with their high nutritional value and the palm tree’s ability to withstand harsh climatic conditions, offer a sustainable and reliable solution that can contribute to food security in many countries around the world.
Successful agricultural diplomacy and pioneering international initiatives
The Kingdom has not only achieved leadership in production and exports, but has also spearheaded successful diplomatic efforts that have yielded strategic gains for the sector globally. Among these successes is the adoption of an international standard for fresh dates within the Codex Alimentarius Commission, which will facilitate international trade and raise global quality standards. Furthermore, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) adopted the Kingdom's proposal to designate 2027 as the "International Year of the Date Palm," a step that will highlight the global importance of this crop and stimulate investment in its agricultural technologies and processing industries. Future efforts will continue through the International Date Council's plans to establish the "International Date Observatory" to serve as a global data reference, and the signing of strategic agreements for knowledge transfer and the localization of modern technologies, thus ensuring the sustainability of this Saudi leadership.
