The National Center for Meteorology issued an important alert regarding the weather on Monday, warning of the formation of fog of varying intensity over large parts of five major regions, leading to a significant decrease in horizontal visibility.

Details of the National Center for Meteorology's warning

The center explained in its report that this weather phenomenon began in the early hours of this morning and is expected to continue until 8:00 AM in some areas, while extending to 9:00 AM in others. The report indicated that the effects of the fog will be severe, with horizontal visibility expected to drop to between 3 and 5 kilometers in some places, and potentially to less than one kilometer in others, posing a risk to public safety, especially on highways and between cities.

Areas and cities affected by the fog:

  • The Eastern Province: includes the governorates of Jubail, Khobar, Khafji, Dammam, Qatif, Abqaiq, Ras Tanura, in addition to Al-Ahsa and many others.
  • Makkah Region: It is affected by the governorates of Al Qunfudhah, Al Lith, Taif, Adham and Maysan.
  • Asir region: includes Al Birk, Al Qahmah, Al Namas, Balqarn, Tanomah, Abha, Ahad Rafidah, and Khamis Mushait.
  • Jazan region: The governorates of Darb, Bish, Jazan, and the Farasan Islands are affected.
  • Al-Baha region: It includes Al-Hujrah, Al-Makhwah, Far’ah Ghamid Al-Zanad, Qalwah, and Al-Baha, in addition to Al-Qura, Al-Mandaq, Baljurashi, and Bani Hassan.

Climate context and the importance of early warnings

Fog formation is a common natural phenomenon in the Kingdom during certain times of the year, particularly during winter and the transitional periods between seasons. This phenomenon occurs as a result of water vapor condensing near the Earth's surface when high humidity and low temperatures are present. The National Center of Meteorology, established as part of the National Environment Strategy within Vision 2030, plays a vital role in monitoring these phenomena and issuing early warnings to protect lives and property.

Expected effects and safety guidelines

Reduced visibility caused by fog has direct and serious impacts, particularly on the transportation sector. Locally, the risk of traffic accidents increases significantly, requiring drivers to exercise extreme caution and adhere to safety instructions issued by the General Directorate of Traffic, such as reducing speed, using fog lights, and maintaining a safe following distance. Air traffic at airports in the affected areas may also be affected, potentially leading to delays or rescheduling of some flights. Economically, fog can impact shipping and logistics, especially in the Eastern Province, which includes vital ports such as King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam and Jubail Commercial Port, potentially slowing down supply chains temporarily.
