A strategic step to enhance the transport infrastructure in the Kingdom
In a move reflecting Saudi Arabia’s commitment to developing its infrastructure and modernizing its transport and logistics sector, the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) announced a major contract with Talgo, a leading Spanish manufacturer of high-speed trains. The contract, valued at €1.3 billion, includes the manufacturing and supply of 20 new Talgo 350 trains, along with a comprehensive maintenance agreement, for the Haramain High-Speed Railway network connecting Mecca and Medina via Jeddah and King Abdullah Economic City.

This project is an integral part of Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to diversify the national economy and enhance the Kingdom's position as a global logistics hub and a link between three continents. Domestically, the new trains will significantly increase the capacity of the Haramain High-Speed Railway, enabling it to meet the growing demand for its services, especially during peak seasons such as Hajj and Umrah. The number of daily trips is expected to rise from the current 100 to over 140, reducing road congestion and providing more sustainable transportation options. Regionally and internationally, this expansion reinforces the Kingdom's image as a leading nation investing in cutting-edge technologies to serve pilgrims and enhance their experience from arrival to departure. Advanced technical specifications
The new Talgo trains, which will join the existing fleet of 35 trains, feature advanced technical specifications that ensure passenger comfort and safety. The Haramain High-Speed Railway line is 450 kilometers long and designed to operate at a maximum speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Each train consists of 13 passenger cars and two locomotives, with a total capacity of 417 seats across two travel classes, including dedicated spaces for restaurants and for passengers with disabilities. A key design feature is the direct access to the entire platform level without internal stairs, which speeds up passenger boarding and alighting and enhances operational efficiency at stations. Under the contract, Talgo will be responsible for maintaining the entire fleet of 55 trains until 2033, with the possibility of extension, ensuring the continuity of service at the highest international quality standards.
