Saudi Railways (SAR) announces a competition to manufacture 10 new passenger trains for the Northern Network, with the aim of doubling capacity and supporting Vision 2030.

In a strategic move aimed at transforming the Kingdom's rail transport sector, the Saudi Railway Company (SAR) has announced a global tender for the manufacture and supply of 10 new passenger trains for its Northern Network. This announcement is a key component of the company's ongoing efforts to develop the transport system and enhance the efficiency of passenger services, aligning directly with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and the aspirations of Vision 2030, which prioritizes quality of life and infrastructure development.

Competition details and application deadline

SAR clarified that the scope of the competition extends beyond manufacturing to include the design and supply of new trains according to the latest international standards, as well as the provision of long-term fleet maintenance services. This comprehensive contract aims to ensure asset sustainability and enhance the operational readiness of the trains in the long term. The company has set May 11, 2026, as the deadline for receiving bids from competing companies, in accordance with the approved government tendering procedures.

A leap in capacity

Commenting on the project, the CEO of Saudi Railways (SAR), Dr. Bashar bin Khalid Al-Malik, affirmed that expanding the passenger fleet is a strategic objective for the company. He noted that the introduction of the ten new trains will lead to an unprecedented increase in the operational capacity of the Northern Network, with current capacity expected to triple to more than 2.4 million seats annually. This expansion will enable SAR to meet the growing demand for intercity transportation services, particularly during holiday seasons.

The importance of the Northern Network and the journey route

The North Train network holds immense strategic importance as it connects the capital, Riyadh, to the far north of the Kingdom, passing through vital stations including Al Majma'ah, Al Qassim, Hail, and Al Jawf, reaching as far as Al Qurayyat near the Jordanian border. This crucial line stretches for approximately 2,750 kilometers and serves as a major artery for both transportation and freight. The company plans future expansion by adding new stations, most notably Al Zulfi station, which will enhance geographical connectivity and facilitate the movement of citizens and residents between these disparate regions. Furthermore, it will support domestic tourism and reduce reliance on long-distance car travel, thus positively impacting road safety.

Comprehensive upgrade of the railway system

SAR does not operate in isolation from the rest of the network; this competition is an extension of the company's ongoing modernization strategy. In parallel with the North Train project, 10 new trains are currently being manufactured to serve the Eastern Network (connecting Riyadh and Dammam), reflecting a comprehensive vision for developing passenger transport services throughout the Kingdom, increasing operational efficiency, and enhancing service reliability across the entire national railway network.
