The National Center for Meteorology issued an alert regarding the expected weather conditions in parts of the Riyadh region on Monday, warning of the impact of active winds that will stir up dust and sand, leading to a significant decrease in horizontal visibility.
According to the center's report, this weather phenomenon will begin at 4:00 AM and continue until 6:00 PM. The areas directly affected include the governorates of Al-Aflaj, As-Sulayyil, and Wadi Ad-Dawasir. The center explained that the accompanying effects include a significant increase in surface wind activity and near-zero horizontal visibility, which may drop to between one and three kilometers.
The climatic context of the dust storm phenomenon in Riyadh
Sand and dust storms, known locally as "Al-Ajaj," are a common weather phenomenon in the Riyadh region and central Saudi Arabia in general. This is due to the region's desert geography and its location within the Ad-Dahna and An-Nafud Al-Kabir deserts, which are major sources of dust. These storms increase in frequency during the transitional periods between seasons, particularly in spring and autumn, when low-pressure systems develop, causing strong winds capable of carrying enormous quantities of sand and dust over long distances, thus impacting air quality and the daily lives of residents.
Expected effects and safety guidelines
These weather phenomena have far-reaching effects that extend beyond simply reducing visibility. On the health front, experts warn against inhaling fine dust particles, which can cause respiratory problems, especially in children, the elderly, and those with asthma and allergies. Health authorities, such as the Ministry of Health, advise residents to stay indoors as much as possible, keep windows tightly closed, and wear protective masks when absolutely necessary to go out.
In terms of transportation, reduced visibility poses a significant risk to road safety on highways and main roads. The General Directorate of Traffic typically issues warnings to drivers to exercise caution, reduce speed, and maintain a safe following distance. Air traffic at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh may also be affected, potentially leading to delays or rescheduling of some flights to ensure flight safety.
The General Directorate of Civil Defense calls on citizens and residents to follow weather reports issued by the National Center for Meteorology and to adhere to the instructions announced through various media outlets to ensure their safety.
