In a move reflecting a growing commitment to environmental sustainability and enhanced community engagement, the Riyadh Municipality, represented by the South Riyadh Sector, implemented a large-scale volunteer initiative to improve and rehabilitate the southern part of Wadi Al-Sulai. The initiative saw active participation from over 200 volunteers, aiming to preserve this important natural landmark and raise environmental awareness among residents and visitors of the capital.
Diverse community efforts for a clean environment
The campaign was distinguished by the diversity of its participants, including 50 high school students and 150 volunteers from the “Filipinos for a Green Saudi Arabia Initiative,” representing various nationalities. This diversity reflects the spirit of cooperation and shared responsibility that prevails in Riyadh society. The volunteers' efforts resulted in the collection of approximately 9 tons of various types of waste, directly contributing to improving the valley's overall appearance and preserving its ecosystem. In addition to the cleanup efforts, the initiative included awareness activities targeting valley visitors, focusing on the importance of preserving natural sites and adhering to positive environmental practices.
Wadi Al-Sulai: The lung of Riyadh and its historical and environmental importance
Wadi Al-Sulai is one of the longest and most important valleys in the Riyadh region, stretching for a considerable distance and serving as a major natural drainage basin for rainwater and flash floods in the city. Throughout history, the valley has been an integral part of the capital's natural landscape, and today it is considered a "green lung" and a natural haven for residents. With urban expansion, particularly in the newly developed southern part of the city, the valley has become a popular destination for families and individuals seeking to enjoy nature, further emphasizing the importance of its preservation and protection from pollution.
An initiative that aligns with the Kingdom's Vision 2030
This initiative is a practical implementation of the goals of Saudi Vision 2030, which prioritizes improving quality of life and promoting environmental sustainability. It not only contributes to achieving the objectives of the "Green Saudi Arabia" and "Green Riyadh" initiatives at the local level, but also strengthens the culture of volunteerism as a cornerstone of community development. Engaging youth and residents in such activities instills in them a sense of belonging and responsibility towards their environment, transforming them into active partners in the Kingdom's ongoing sustainable development journey.
Expected impact and the importance of continuing efforts
The impact of this initiative extends far beyond simply cleaning a specific geographical area. Locally, it contributes to a healthier and cleaner environment for Riyadh residents and encourages domestic ecotourism. Nationally, it presents a successful model of partnership between the public and private sectors that can be replicated in other cities. The continuity and regular organization of such campaigns are the true guarantee for preserving environmental gains and achieving lasting behavioral change among community members towards their natural surroundings.
