The Saudi Arabian Lacrosse Federation announced that Riyadh has won the right to host the second edition of the Asian Lacrosse Championship, a move that further underscores the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's leading role in the continental sporting arena. The championship is scheduled to take place from February 1st to 5th, 2026, with the participation of four Asian national teams: Iraq, Pakistan, India, and the host nation, Saudi Arabia.
The tournament will be held at the stadiums of the College of Technology in Riyadh, where the organizers confirmed the completion of all organizational, technical and logistical preparations to ensure an exceptional edition that reflects the scale of development witnessed by the sports sector in the Kingdom, and provides a unique experience for the participating teams and fans.
Historical background and rapid growth in Asia
Lacrosse is one of the oldest team sports in the world, originating with the indigenous peoples of North America, where it was played as part of cultural and social rituals. The game is characterized by its fast pace, combining speed, skill, and physical strength, and relies heavily on teamwork and tactical planning. In recent years, lacrosse has begun to gain popularity beyond its traditional borders, particularly in Asia, with the establishment of new national federations and a growing interest in organizing regional and continental tournaments that contribute to raising the technical level of players.
The importance of a strategy that aligns with Vision 2030
Hosting this championship comes within a broader strategic context for the Kingdom. In this regard, Fahad Al-Arifi, CEO of the Saudi Lacrosse Federation, explained that “the Kingdom’s hosting of the championship is an extension of the significant support the sports sector receives, and aligns with the objectives of Vision 2030, which aims to diversify sports, expand the base of participants, and attract continental and international championships.” These events represent a fundamental pillar in achieving the Vision’s goals, not only by promoting public health and encouraging youth participation in sports, but also by transforming the Kingdom into a global destination for sports tourism.
Expected regional and international impact
Regionally, the tournament contributes to strengthening sporting ties among the participating Asian nations. Al-Arifi added, “We believe that sport is a bridge for human connection before it is competition, and this tournament represents a space for Asian youth to meet, exchange experiences, and build human relationships that extend beyond the playing field.” He also noted that the tournament “represents an important milestone in the development of lacrosse in the Kingdom and the region, and reflects the efforts made to build a comprehensive sports system that supports team sports and provides a competitive environment that contributes to discovering and developing talent.” By organizing such events, Saudi Arabia is solidifying its position as a sporting leader in the region, capable of supporting and developing various sports and providing an ideal platform for sporting growth and development across the continent.
