A theatrical movement that aligns with Vision 2030
The Riyadh Theatre Festival cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader cultural context of Saudi Arabia. This festival is an integral part of the Ministry of Culture and the General Authority for Theatre and Performing Arts' strategy, stemming from the Kingdom's Vision 2030 , which aims to transform culture into a way of life and an engine of economic growth. The festival reflects the leadership's commitment to developing the infrastructure of the cultural sector and empowering national talent to express their identity and address their concerns through contemporary artistic means.
This movement is an extension of the history of Saudi theater, which has gone through multiple stages, reaching the current institutional stage that ensures the sustainability of creative work and provides logistical and material support for artists, thus moving theater from individual efforts to a professional industry.
A comprehensive cultural program that goes beyond the show
The organizers confirmed that the festival will not be limited to competitive performances, but will offer a comprehensive cultural experience aimed at enriching visitors and participants. The festival schedule includes a range of accompanying activities , including specialized training workshops designed to hone the skills of practitioners in acting, directing, and scenography.
The festival will also feature critical and practical seminars following the performances, fostering constructive dialogue between critics, creators, and the audience—a long-standing theatrical tradition that contributes to raising artistic awareness and developing the critical tools of theater professionals. These events offer an ideal opportunity to exchange experiences and build bridges of communication between different generations of theater practitioners.
The importance of the festival and its expected impact
The Riyadh Theatre Festival derives its importance from being a major national platform that provides Saudi creators with access to professional performance spaces and showcases their work both locally and regionally. The festival is expected to contribute to boosting tourism and cultural activity in Riyadh during its run, in addition to its role in enhancing the presence of Saudi theatre on the international stage in the future by exporting winning and outstanding productions.
