The Saudi capital, Riyadh, is preparing to host a landmark event that reflects its growing status as a global hub for future industries. From January 8th to 10th, 2026, the in-person Global Innovation Competition in Metals (Future Metals Leaders) will take place. This event is jointly organized by the Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources and the National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP), and is a key component of the International Mining Conference, which has become a leading global platform.
The camp is witnessing significant international momentum, with 356 innovators representing 70 teams from 32 countries participating in the final stage. This rigorous selection process followed a screening of 1,812 applicants forming 371 teams from 57 countries worldwide, underscoring the growing importance of this competition in attracting bright minds and global talent to contribute to the development of the mining sector.
Strategic context and ambitious vision
This step comes within the framework of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, which positions the mining sector as the third pillar of national industry, alongside oil, gas, and petrochemicals. Through these initiatives, the Kingdom seeks to leverage its vast mineral wealth, valued at trillions of riyals, not only through extraction but also through the localization of knowledge and innovation. The National Industrial Development and Logistics Program (NIDLP) is a key driver of this direction, aiming to transform the Kingdom into a leading industrial power and a global logistics hub.

The participating teams will compete intensively across three main tracks designed to address six key challenges facing the sector globally:
1. Smart Technologies Track: This track focuses on integrating artificial intelligence and automation to accelerate exploration and digitize mining operations, reducing human error and increasing efficiency.
2. Safety and Security Track: This track aims to develop risk prediction systems to protect lives in harsh operating environments.
3. Sustainability Track: This track addresses environmental issues through solutions for recycling mining waste and maximizing the use of natural resources.

This event is of paramount importance given the global shift towards clean energy, as global demand for critical minerals essential to technology industries and electric vehicles continues to rise.
