A report by the General Authority for Statistics reveals a decrease in the price of basmati rice and an increase in the price of flour in Saudi Arabia during December. Learn more about food commodity prices and their monthly fluctuations.

Saudi Arabian markets witnessed a noticeable fluctuation in the prices of basic food commodities during December, according to the latest data issued by the General Authority for Statistics. Basmati rice prices saw a promising decline for consumers, while flour and other grain products experienced slight increases, reflecting the dynamics of supply and demand in the local market and its susceptibility to global changes.

Rice and grain price details

A bulletin on average prices of goods and services revealed that the price of basmati rice, a staple in Saudi cuisine, has decreased by 1.2% month-on-month, with the average price of a 10 kg bag reaching approximately 95.5 riyals. This decrease comes as a welcome relief to Saudi families who rely on rice as a daily main meal.

In contrast, Indian rice (non-basmati) followed a different trend, rising by 0.4% during the same period to reach SAR 80.9 per 10 kg bag. Imported barley prices also increased, rising by 0.6% to SAR 67.2 per 50 kg bag, which could indirectly affect the livestock and feed sector.

Flour and derivative product price movements

Regarding flour products, data showed a slight increase in prices; the price of local whole wheat flour rose by 0.3% to reach 3.1 riyals per kilogram, while white flour increased by 0.2% to reach 4.7 riyals for a 2 kg bag. Sorghum also saw a 0.3% increase (137 riyals for 40 kg), while millet remained stable at 120.8 riyals.

Despite these price movements in raw materials, the most consumed finished goods remained stable, with the price of white flatbread remaining at 1.1 riyals, as well as vermicelli at 6 riyals, while pasta saw a marginal increase of 0.2% to reach 6.1 riyals.

Economic and nutritional importance

This data is particularly important given the role of rice and wheat in Saudi Arabia's food security. The Kingdom is one of the largest rice importers in the region, and dishes like "Kabsa" are an integral part of its cultural and culinary heritage. Therefore, any decrease in basmati rice prices positively impacts citizens' purchasing power and eases the burden of their monthly food expenses.

On the other hand, the stability of bread prices despite a slight increase in flour prices reflects the success of government policies in maintaining stable prices for strategic commodities and protecting consumers from sharp fluctuations. The General Authority for Statistics regularly monitors these indicators to ensure market transparency and provide accurate data that helps decision-makers, investors, and consumers alike understand market trends.
