The Red Sea International Film Festival has announced its 2025 Short Film Jury, led by producer Kim Magnussen, to evaluate the largest international and Arab participation in the festival's history.

In a move reflecting the growing stature of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the global map of the seventh art, the Red Sea International Film Festival details of the jury for its upcoming 2025 Short Film Competition. An exceptional group of experts has been selected to evaluate the works, confirming the festival's commitment to standards of quality and cultural diversity.

The composition of the judging panel: a blend of global expertise and Arab identity

The festival management assigned the judging tasks to three prominent figures representing different cinematic schools, to ensure a comprehensive critical perspective:

  • Kim Magnussen: The veteran Danish producer and two-time Oscar winner, who represents global weight and long-standing European expertise in the film industry.
  • Darin Sallam: The Jordanian director who has reached international acclaim, representing the authentic Arab voice and contemporary directorial vision.
  • Noor Alkhadra: The talented Saudi actress who reflects the rapid development and renewed spirit of the emerging Saudi cinema.

This diversity in the committee aims to provide an in-depth reading of the participating works, which this year recorded the highest number since the festival’s inception, thus placing a great responsibility on the committee to choose the best to win the prestigious “Al-Yusr” awards.

Historical context: Jeddah as a cultural beacon

Since its inception, the Red Sea International Film Festival has been more than just a fleeting event; it has become the culmination of a massive cultural movement within the Kingdom's Vision 2030. Thanks to its strategic location on the Red Sea coast, the historic city of Jeddah has transformed into a meeting point for civilizations and cultures. Since its founding, the festival has worked to bridge the gap between Arab and international cinema, providing a vital platform for filmmakers from Asia and Africa to showcase their stories, which have long sought a global audience.

The importance of the event and its regional and international impact

The 2025 edition is particularly significant due to the substantial expansion of international participation, with works from France, Taiwan, Palestine, Kenya, Burkina Faso, and the Philippines competing. This geographical diversity reinforces the festival's position as a cultural bridge connecting East and West.

Domestically, the "New Saudi Cinema" program plays a pivotal role in empowering national talent. Saudi participation is no longer limited to tentative attempts, but now includes mature works in diverse fields such as action films, documentaries, and animation, promising a bright future for the local industry.

Towards globalization

Faisal Baltayour, CEO of the festival, affirmed that the selection of these distinguished names for the judging panel reflects the festival's strategy of supporting emerging voices and breaking with tradition. All eyes are now on December 11th, the date of the awards ceremony, where the winners of what is considered the strongest competition in its category will be announced, further cementing the festival's position as a leading creative hub in the region.
