The National Center for Meteorology has issued a red alert for the Najran region due to heavy dust storms causing near-zero visibility. Learn about the expected impacts and safety measures.

The National Center for Meteorology in Saudi Arabia issued (red alert) warning of dense dust storms affecting the Najran region. The warning covers the city of Najran and the governorates of Badr Al-Janoub, Thar, Habuna, Yadma, and Khubash, indicating that this weather phenomenon will have serious and immediate impacts.

According to the center's statement, the effects of this weather condition include near-total loss of horizontal visibility, potentially dropping below one kilometer. The condition has already begun and is expected to continue until 9:00 AM today, necessitating extreme caution from residents and drivers on the roads.

The climatic context of the dust storm phenomenon

Sandstorms and dust haze are common weather phenomena in Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula in general, due to its desert geography. The Najran region, located in the southwestern part of the Kingdom, near the Rub' al Khali desert, one of the world's largest sand deserts, is frequently affected by strong winds that stir up dust and sand, especially during seasonal changes. These hazes form when strong winds carry fine particles of dust and sand from the arid, dry land into the atmosphere, reducing air quality and visibility.

Expected effects and preventive measures

The red alert has far-reaching implications for various aspects of daily life. On the health front, asthma and respiratory patients, the elderly, and children are advised to stay indoors and avoid going out except when absolutely necessary, as these fine particles can cause respiratory irritation and serious health problems. The transportation sector is also directly affected, as poor visibility increases the risk of accidents on highways and may lead to delays or cancellations of some flights to and from Najran Regional Airport. In such conditions, educational authorities, such as Najran University and the Education Department, often announce the suspension of in-person classes and the shift to remote learning to ensure the safety of students. The Civil Defense Directorate urges citizens and residents to follow weather updates from official sources and adhere to issued instructions to ensure their safety.
