Historic announcement of the largest expansion of Quba Mosque
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, announced the launch of the King Salman Project for the Expansion of Quba Mosque, the largest expansion in the mosque's history since its founding. This massive project reflects the great care that the wise leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia gives to historical mosques and Islamic sites, particularly those associated with the Prophet's biography, with the aim of highlighting their profound religious and cultural significance.
Quba Mosque: Historical Background and Unique Religious Significance
The Quba Mosque holds an exceptional place in the hearts of Muslims, as it is the first mosque built in Islam. It was founded by the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself, who participated in laying its first stones immediately upon his arrival in Medina after migrating from Mecca in the first year of the Hijra. Its mention is immortalized in the Holy Quran in the verse: “A mosque founded on piety from the first day is more worthy of your standing in prayer.” Furthermore, a hadith (saying of the Prophet) speaks of its virtues, in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever purifies himself in his house and then goes to the Quba Mosque and prays therein will have the reward of performing Umrah.” This religious and historical significance has made it a major destination for visitors to Medina, including pilgrims performing Hajj and Umrah, and Muslims from all over the world.
Project objectives and developmental dimensions
The King Salman Project for the Expansion of Quba Mosque aims to increase the mosque's capacity to an unprecedented level to accommodate the growing number of worshippers and visitors. The mosque's total area will be increased approximately tenfold, from 5,035 square meters to 50,000 square meters, thereby increasing its capacity to 66,000 worshippers. The project not only expands the mosque building but also includes a comprehensive development of the surrounding area. This involves the restoration and development of 57 historical sites associated with the Prophet's life, including wells, farms, and orchards that were once part of the area's historical fabric. These sites will be linked to Prophetic trails to enrich the religious and cultural experience for visitors.
The importance and expected impact of the project
The significance of this project transcends mere urban expansion, representing a qualitative leap in the services provided to pilgrims. Locally, the project will enhance the infrastructure of Medina and preserve its historical urban character while developing it with a modern architectural style inspired by the city's identity. Regionally and internationally, the project underscores the Kingdom's leading role in serving the Two Holy Mosques and the holy sites. This development aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom's Vision 2030, specifically the "Serving the Pilgrims" and "Quality of Life" programs, by facilitating visitor access to the mosque and providing a comprehensive and accessible spiritual experience. This will deepen Muslims' connection to their history and reinforce Medina's position as a global center of cultural and religious influence.
