the Qatif Governorate Municipality launched its innovative new initiative, "Our Facade is Green," which aims to bring about a radical transformation in urban landscape . The initiative's first phase focuses on Al-Fath Street, one of the area's most vital arteries, with the goal of improving storefronts and integrating greenery into the urban environment, thereby enhancing the quality of life and increasing the city's visual appeal.
Strategic context and developmental dimensions
This initiative aligns with the goals of Saudi Vision 2030 and the Quality of Life Program, which aims to "humanize cities" and increase per capita green spaces. Such initiatives are particularly important in Qatif Governorate, given the region's long agricultural history. The municipality aims to revitalize the densely populated commercial areas, contributing to lower temperatures and reduced carbon emissions, in addition to the positive psychological impact of the color green on shoppers and residents.
The mayor of Qatif Governorate explained that the choice of Al-Fath Street as a starting point was not random, but rather came as a result of its commercial density and its urgent need for aesthetic touches to restore its splendor, to be a model to be followed in the rest of the governorate’s streets.
Volunteer efforts and field support
Human resources are the cornerstone of this project, with 33 volunteers participating in an intensive field campaign. Their role extends beyond manual labor to include providing guidance and support to business owners. The team works to ensure the initiative's standards are strictly implemented, which include removing all visual pollution from billboards and dilapidated storefronts, replacing them with modern designs that prioritize visual harmony and overall cleanliness.
Expected economic and environmental impact
The goals of the "Our Green Front" initiative extend beyond aesthetics to encompass economic and environmental dimensions. It is globally recognized that improving the urban environment and planting trees along storefronts directly contributes to increased commercial activity and a higher market value for the area. The well-considered plan includes planting a selection of sustainable trees and shrubs suited to the region's climate, arranged in a geometric pattern that provides shade and enhances the overall ambiance of the street.
The first tour, which included visits to 23 shops, resulted in a remarkable response and great enthusiasm from the merchants, who showed a clear commitment to contributing to the beautification of their storefronts, realizing that improving the urban landscape positively impacts the comfort of shoppers and visitors, and makes shopping an enjoyable experience and not just a means of fulfilling needs.
Strengthening community partnership
Engineer Al-Qarni affirmed that this step represents a genuine activation of the concept of community partnership, where the efforts of the municipal sector are combined with those of the private sector and volunteers to achieve a common goal. Through these ongoing initiatives, the municipality seeks to create an integrated urban environment that balances commercial development with environmental sustainability, thus solidifying Qatif's position as a preferred destination for leisure and shopping, and enhancing environmental awareness among all segments of society regarding the importance of green spaces within cities.
